Abu Ghadiyya: the murderer sahabi who will go

to hell?

Let us see as to who was the one who killed Ammar

and What had Holy Prophet asws said about him

NARRATION 1

We find this narration in Tabaqat ibn Saad, and it says

‫أخبرنا عفان بن مسلم ومسلم بن إبراهيم وموسى بن إسماعيل قالوا أخبرنا ربيعة بن كلثوم بن جبر قال حدثني أبي قال كنت بواسط القصب عند‬
‫عبد االعلى بن عبد هللا بن عامر فقلت االذن هذا أبو غادية الجهني فقال عبد األعلى أدخلوه فدخل عليه مقطعات له فإذا رجل طوال ضرب من‬
‫الرجال كأنه ليس من هذه األمة فلما أن قعد قال بايعت رسول هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم يوم العقبة فقال يا أيها الناس أال إن دماءكم وأموالكم حرام‬
‫عليكم إلى أن تلقوا ربكم كحرمة يومكم هذا في شهركم هذا في بلدكم هذا أال هل بلغت فقلنا نعم فقال اللهم اشهد ثم قال أال ال ترجعوا بعدي كفارا‬
‫يضرب بعضكم رقاب بعض قال ثم أتبع ذا فقال إنا كنا نعد عمار بن ياسر فينا حنانا فبينا أنا في مسجد قباء إذ هو يقول أال إن نعثال هذا لعثمان‬
‫فالتفت فلو أجد عليه أعوانا لوطئته حتى أقتله قال قلت اللهم إنك إن تشأ تمكني من عمار فلما كان يوم صفين أقبل يستن أول الكتيبة رجال حتى‬
‫إذا كان بين الصفين فأبصر رجل عورة فطعنه في ركبته بالرمح فعثر فانكشف المغفر عنه فضربته فإذا رأس عمار قال فلم أر رجال أبين ضاللة‬
‫عندي منه إنه سمع من النبي عليه السالم ما سمع ثم قتل عمارا قال واستسقى أبو غادية فأتي بماء في زجاج فأبى أن يشرب فيها فأتي بماء في‬
‫قدح فشرب فقال رجل على رأس األمير قائم بالنبطية أوى يد كفتا يتورع عن الشراب في زجاج ولم يتورع عن قتل عمار‬

Rabi’ia bin Kulthom narrates from his father that we were in Wasit ul Qasb with Abd ul Ala bin
ABdullah bin Aamir. So i asked him: Give me permission, he is Abu Ghadiyya Jahni. So Abd ul Aala
said: let him enter. So he entered and he had short cloths. He was a tall man and did not seem of this
nation. When we sat, he said: I did bayat of Holy Prophet asws on day of Uqbah, so He said: o People!
your blood and money is haram (in sense of respected) on you till the time you meet your Lord, it is
haram like this day in this month in this city; so have i give you what i said. We said: Yes. He said: o
Allah! be witness. then he said: Do not become Kafir after me by hitting each other. We followed that.
abu ghadiya said: we took Ammar bin Yasir good for us when one day he was in Mosque of Qaba, and he
said: Beware this Nathal, he is Uthman. I saw here and there, had i found helpers, i would have killed
him by crushing him. I prayed: O Lord! if you desire, you can me power on him. And then on day of
Siffen, he was coming and when a man saw him alone, he hit him with spear on knees, he fell down, and
his head was exposed. I hit him and that was the head of Ammar. Narrator says that i had not seen any
man of misguidance among us more than him. He had heard it from Prophet asws, yet he killed Ammar.
Then abu ghadiya asked for water. so water was brought for him in glass. he refused. then it was brought

ibn Hajar writes in Taqreeb

6943- ‫موسى ابن إسماعيل المنقري بكسر الميم وسكون النون وفتح القاف أبو سلمة التبوذكي بفتح المثناة وضم الموحدة وسكون الواو وفتح‬
‫المعجمة مشهور بكنيته وباسمه ثقة ثبت من صغار التاسعة‬

So, the narration is alteast hasan, but let us see another narration, and there we will present authentications
on part of scholars

NARRATION 2

Let us see another narration

‫قال أخبرنا عفان بن مسلم قال أخبرنا حماد بن سلمة قال أخبرنا أبو حفص وكلثوم بن جبر عن أبي غادية قال سمعت عمار بن ياسر يقع في‬
‫عثمان يشتمه بالمدينة قال فتوعدته بالقتل قلت لئن أمكنني هللا منك الفعلن فلما كايوم صفين جعل عمار يحمل على الناس فقيل هذا عمار فرأيت‬
‫فرجة بين الرئتين وبين الساقين قال فحملت عليه فطعنته في ركبته قال فوقع فقتلته فقيل قتلت عمار بن ياسر وأخبر عمرو بن العاص فقال‬
‫ سمعت رسول هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم يقول إن قاتله وسالبه في النار فقيل لعمرو بن العاص هو ذا أنت تقاتله فقال إنما قال قاتله وسالبه‬.

Abu Ghadiya says that i heard Ammar bin Yasir speaking ill of Uthman and insulting him in Madina. I
threatened him with death, and said: If allah gives me power on you, i will kill you. And on the day of
Siffen, he was there attacking, and people said that there is Ammar. I saw a hole between his protective
layer between lungs and thighs. I attacked him and hit him at knees, he fell down, and then i killed him.
So it was then said that i killed him. I told this to Amr bin Aas, he said: I heard Prophet saying: the one
who will kill him and steal his things are in hell. So he was asked: you were fighting him as well. He said:
Holy Prophet spoke of the one who would fight and steal

AUTHENTICITY 

1-This narration has been mentioned by Dhabi in Sair ul A’alam Nabala, 1/425

And Sheikh Shoaib ul Arnawut has termed the chain Hasan in his takhreej

2-Sheikh Albany has mentioned this narration in his Silsila Ahadeeth Sahihiyya, 5/19; and he said

I say: this chain is sahih and narrators are thiqa and that of Imam Muslim, Abu Ghadiyya, he is jahni, and he is
Sahabi

STATUS OF THE ONE WHO WOULD KILL HAZRAT AMMAR

What will happen to those who have Killed Hazrat Ammar, let us see a narration

‫‏‏قتل‏‏عمار بن ياسر‏‬: ‫ عن‏‏أبي غادية‏‏قال‬،‫‏‏أبو حفص‏‏وكلثوم بن جبر‏‏‬: ‫ أخبرنا‬، : ‫‏‏حماد بن سلمة‏‏قال‬: ‫ حدثنا‬، : ‫‏‏عفان‏‏قال‬: ‫حدثنا‬
‫ إنما قال‬: ‫ قال‬، ‫‏فإنك هو ذا تقاتله‬: ‫ فقيل‏‏لعمرو‏‬، ‫‏إن قاتله‏‏وسالبه‏‏في النار‬:‫ سمعت رسول هللا‏ (ص)‏‏يقول‏‬: ‫‏قال‬،‫‏فأخبر‏‏عمرو بن العاص‏‬
‫ قاتله‏‏وسالبه‬:.

Abu Ghadiya said that when Ammar was murdered, and the news was given to Amr bin AAs, he said: I
heard Holy Prophet saying: the one who will kill him, and take away his possessions, he will go to hell. So
Amr was asked: you were also fighting him. He said: Holy Prophet said the one who kills him and takes
away things

Shiekh Shoaib commented on this chain in his takhreej of Musnad Ahmad under narration no. 17776; and said

Sanad is strong/qawi 

2- Haithmi mentioned this in his Majma uz Zawaid, and said

12064 – ‫ ” إن قاتله‬: ‫ سمعت رسول هللا – صلى هللا عليه وسلم – يقول‬: ‫ فقال‬، ‫ فأخبر عمرو بن العاص‬، ‫ قتل عمار‬: ‫وعن أبي غادية قال‬
‫ ” قاتله وسالبه‬: ‫ إنما قال‬: ‫ فإنك هو ذا تقاتله ؟ قال‬: ‫ فقيل لعمرو‬. ” ‫ ” وسالبه في النار‬.

‫ خليا‬: ‫ فقال‬، ‫ عن عبد هللا بن عمرو أن رجلين أتيا عمرو بن العاص يختصمان في دم عمار وسلبه‬: ‫ إال أنه قال‬، ‫ والطبراني بنحوه‬، ‫رواه أحمد‬
‫ورجال أحمد ثقات‬ ، ” ‫ ” إن قاتل عمار وسالبه في النار‬: ‫ فإني سمعت رسول هللا – صلى هللا عليه وسلم – يقول‬، ‫ عنه‬.

3- Albany mentions this in his Silsila Ahadeeth Sahihiyya, 5/18, narration 2008

CONCLUSION

So far, we have seen that there is an authentic narration from Holy Prophet asws regarding a sahabi, Abu
Ghadiya, who was a murderer and killed Hazrat Ammar. And we have seen another authentic narration which
says that the one who would kill Ammar, he would go to hell

Now, there is one excuse left with ahlusunnah, and that is, issue of ijtihaad.
You see, that is such a wonderful excuse that they fought, and they were mujtahid, and therefore, even if they
err, they get reward

which in essence means: if they kill a man in ijtihaad, they still get one reward

Let us see how Albany sees this issue

He writes after the narration which i mentioned under narration 2 that

” ‫ و قد قال الحافظ في آخر ترجمته من‬, ‫ و أبو الغادية هو الجهني و هو صحابي كما أثبت ذلك جمع‬, ‫ رجاله ثقات رجال مسلم‬, ‫هذا إسناد صحيح‬
‫ و للمجتهد‬, ‫ ” و الظن بالصحابة في تلك الحروب أنه كانوا فيها متأولين‬: ‫ و جزم ابن معين بأنه قاتل عمار‬, ‫اإلصابة ” بعد أن ساق الحديث‬
‫ فثبوته للصحابة بالطريق األولى‬, ‫ و إذا ثبت هذا في حق آحاد الناس‬, ‫ ” المخطىء أجر‬.

This chain is Sahih, its narrators are narrators of Imam Muslim. Abu Ghadiya is al Jahni, and he was a
Sahabi as mentioned by many. Ibn Hajar has said at the end of his biography of Abu al-Ghadiyah in al-
Isaba, after citing the above Hadith and the categorical declaration of Ibn Ma’in that Abu Ghadiya was
killed of Hazrat Ammar:

“The Sahaba, in these wars, thought that they were interpreting the texts; and for every Mujtahid that
makes a mistake there is a reward. Since this principle is well established for the common people, then it
is equally established for the Sahaba.”
I say: This is true. However, applying the principle to every single one of them is objectionable because it
will contradict the principle established in the Hadith. It is NOT permitted to say that Abu Ghadiyya, the
killer of hazrat Ammar, has a reward because he killed as a Mujtahid while Holy Prophet asws has said:
“The killer of Ammar will be in Hell.”

Keep in mind that Dhabi had said that he had took oath in Hudaibiyya

‫يقال شهد الحديبية‬

it is said that he was there in hudaibiyya

So, in short, we have seen that there is a sahabi who will go to hell as per saying of Holy Prophet asws
