Hot Deformation in Metals

(Hot Tensile Test (HTT))

Manufacturing Processes Lab
Introduction

• Hot tensile test (HTT) is the method of testing the material properties,
in particular strength of the material, at high temperature.
• Applications such as automotive, power generation plant, and
aerospace are subjected to high thermal temperature that induce
thermal stresses which causes failure of components.
Some applications exposed to high
temperature

Cylinder Head

Turbine Blades

Pistons
Objectives of performing HTT:
• To study the changes in mechanical properties of material at high
temperature.
• To study the changes in microstructural properties of material at high
temperature.
• To investigate the changes in true stress-strain curve of a material for
elevated temperatures.
• To study the sensitivity of material strength to strain rate at high
temperature.

On of the factors that affects the mechanical properties The effect of temperature and strain rate on the strength of
is temperature. Increasing temperature usually lowers material are shown in (Fig.2). It indicates that the increasing
modulus of elasticity, UTS, Yield strength and increases in strain rate increases strength and the sensitivity of strength
Ductility (Fig.1). to strain rate increases with temperature.
