Quiz ( Heat Treatment Process)

1) What is Heat Treatment? Cite expound at least 2 importance as well.

Heat Treatment is a heating process at which metals or any materials is heated and then cooled to
improve its performance durability and properties. One of the importance of this process is that it alters
a material physical, mechanical and chemical properties to be suited for a specific application and it
aids in other manufacturing steps. Also it relieves stress which makes the material or metal easy to weld
to be used in a wide range products in the industry.

2) Explain at least 2 Heat Treatment processes and include to cite the specific product it produces.

1. Annealing - a heat treatment process in which the metal is heated beyond the upper critical
temperature and then cooled at a slow rate. Annealing is carried out to soften the metal. It makes the
metal more suitable for cold working and forming. It also enhances the metal’s machinability, ductility
and toughness. Annealing is also useful in relieving stresses in the part caused due to prior cold working
processes. The plastic deformations present are removed during recrystallisation when the metal
temperature crosses the upper critical temperature. Mostly, many types of steel and cast iron are
annealed in the manufacturing industry which produces work-hardened materials such as sheet metal,
metal wire, for machining operations that create high amounts of heat or material displacement, and for
welded components can create residual stresses in the area of the material exposed to elevated
temperatures; to recreate uniform physical properties, annealing is often used.

2. Normalising -In this process, the metal is heated to a temperature that is 40° C above its upper critical
temperature. This temperature is higher than the one used for hardening or annealing. After holding it
at this temperature for a designated period of time, it is cooled in air. Normalising creates a uniform
grain size and composition throughout the part. Normalising is a heat treatment process used for
relieving internal stresses caused by processes such as welding, casting, or quenching. Normalizing is
used in many different industries for many different materials like ferritic stainless steel stampings in the
automotive industry, nickel-based alloys in the nuclear industry, and carbon steel.
