TUTORIAL 3

1. For the system ethyl ethanoate(1)/n-heptane(2) at 343.15K, the correlation of activity

coefficient and composition are:

ln γ1 = 0.95x22 ln γ2 = 0.95x12

The vapor pressure of ethyl ethanoate at 343.15 K is 79.8 kPa. Assuming the validity of
modified Raoult’s law,

a) Determine the pressure and vapor phase compositions that is in equilibrium with liquid
containing 5 mole % ethyl ethanoate at 343.15 K.
b) Determine the pressure and liquid phase compositions that is in equilibrium with vapor
containing 95 mole % n-heptane at 343.15 K.
c) Show that azeotrope exist at 343.15 K and determine the azeotrope composition and
pressure.
d) Sketch P-x1-y1 diagram showing the condition for a), b) and c).

2. A liquid mixture of cyclohexanone(1)/phenol(2) containing 40 mole % phenol is in equilibrium

with its vapor at 417.15 K. Determine the pressure and vapor phase composition of
cyclohexanone at equilibrium. The system forms an azeotrope at 417.15 K for which the
composition x1az = y1az = 0.294. Vapor pressure of cyclohexanone at 417.15 K is 75.2 kPa and
the correlation of activity coefficient and composition are given by:

ln γ1 = Ax22 ln γ2 = Ax12

Sketch P-x1-y1 diagram for this system at the described condition.

3. The system acetone(1)/methanol(2) form an azeotrope at composition of x1az = y1az = 0.722

and pressure of 101 kPa. The correlation of activity coefficient and composition are:

ln γ1 = 0.801x22 ln γ2 = 0.801x12

By assuming the validity of modified Raoult’s law,

a) Determine the temperature of the system.
b) Determine the pressure and vapor phase compositions that is in equilibrium with liquid
containing 60 mole % methanol at this temperature.
c) Sketch P-x1-y1 diagram showing the condition at azeotrope and b).
