Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
When naming a child, some parents seem to choose a name based simply on their personal preference. In
other families, grandparents or professional name-makers come up with a child's name. And in some cases, the
time of a child's birth influences how the child's name is determined.
In many European cultures, names are typically chosen by parents. Parents' choice for their child's name
may be based on names of relatives or ancestors within their particular family. For example, in Italy, children
are traditionally named after their grandparents. The parents generally use the father's parents' names first. If
they have more children, then they will use the mother's parents' names. Similarly, some people in Eastern
Europe name their children after relatives who have died. This tradition is seen as a means to protect the child
from the Angel of Death.
Traditionally in some Asian countries, a child's grandfather or a fortune-teller chooses the child's name.
In contrast to the tradition of naming children after relatives, the child's name is chosen to influence the child's
character. For example, names may be based on a connection to certain elements such as fire, water, earth,
wood, or metal. Or the name might include a written character meaning beauty, strength, or kindness.
In certain African cultures, when a child is born plays a large part in determining the child's name. In
Ghana's Akan culture, the day a child is born determines the child's name. But each day has different names for
boys and girls. For instance, a boy born on Friday is named Kofi, whereas a girl born on the same day is named
Afua. Both Kofi and Afua are names meaning "wanderer” or “explorer." Children with these names are seen as
travelers.
No matter where the name comes from, a child's name is the first gift in life. Whether it is chosen
according to preference or dictated by tradition, the name reflects something about a child's culture. For that
reason, all names should be treasured and respected.

Marcel Bich, a French entrepreneur who manufactured traditional ink pens, revolutionized the ballpoint
pen industry by creating an affordable and high-quality writing instrument. Bich was shocked at the poor quality
of the ballpoint pens that were available, and also at their high cost. However, he recognised that the ballpoint
was a firmly established invention, and he decided to design a cheap pen that worked well and would be
commercially successful.
Bich sought permission from the Biro brothers to use their original invention's design in one of his pens
and offered to compensate them for each pen sold. For two years, Bich meticulously studied the construction of
every ballpoint pen available, even using a microscope to aid him in his research.
In 1950, Bich introduced the Bic Cristal, a plastic pen with a transparent barrel that wrote smoothly, didn't leak,
and cost just a few cents. The public embraced the new pen, which became a practical writing instrument. In
the UK, the pens are still referred to as Biros, and some Bic models bear the name "Biro" on their side as a nod
to their original inventors.
Bich became extremely wealthy thanks to his invention, which had worldwide appeal. Over the next six
decades, his company, Société Bic, expanded its product line to include inexpensive lighters, razors, and other

Sweden can be one of the first countries to stop using cash. In most cities, buses do not take any cash.
Instead, you pay for your tickets by card or mobile phone before you get on. Some businesses only take cards and
there are banks that do not deal with any notes or coins.
In a cashless society, you do not need to worry about having enough change for the bus. You will feel much
more secure as well. Statistics show that since the decrease in the cash economy, there is not as much crime in
Sweden.
However, not all Swedes like the idea. Elderly people complain much about the problems of paying by
card. Small business are also unhappy because they have to pay a little money to the bank each time somebody pay
them using a card.
It is not just richer countries that are becoming cashless. Many countries in the developing world have
found that mobile phones are perfect for transferring money. For example, in Kenya, only a few people have a
bank account, but lots of Kenyan have mobile phone. Now people can pay for things in shops, pay their bills and
their children’s school fees, and receive their salary with their phones. Kenya has led a revolution in mobile
banking.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
It is often held that technology in general does little to help family relationships as, in many cases, family
members are more interested in their smartphones and the TV than they are in each other. Before smartphones the TV
was blamed the most for breakdowns in communication between parents and children. It was argued that “the box”
stop them from talking to each other, and clashes between family members over what programs to watch create
barriers and cause resentment.
However, TV programs can be booth informative and entertaining. They often provide topics for family
members to discuss, bring them closer together rather than driving them further away. What is more, twenty-first
century families do not need to watch the same program at the same time. The fact that people can watch what they
want results in more time for families to be together rather than less.
The smartphone has taken over from the TV as a major reason for the lack of communication between
family members. Parents often do not see why their children spend so much time online and fail to see the
importance of having an online identity while most teens feel their online image is part of who they are. They often
criticize the amount of time their children spend online rather than attempting to understand why they do it. In fact,
adults are often not very good examples themselves. Who has not witnessed a table at a restaurant where all the
family members are silently focused on their mobile devices?
Broadly speaking, smartphones do have some negative effects on family relationships. This technology is
still relatively new, so many families have not yet learned how to deal with it. Parents and children should discuss
how they use technology to help them all to make the most of technology instead of blaming it for their problems.
