“Family Dinner”

We had a family dinner last night. At the dinner, my father said that he would like a

hamburger. My brother said that he would like a hamburger, too, medium with no

tomato. My uncle said that he would like a hamburger, too, rare with French fries. My

sister said that she might as well have a meatball sandwich and a piece of apple pie. My

aunty said that she’d like a slice of anchovy pizza.

● We use reported speech to tell somebody what another person said.

● We can report another person’s words or our own words.

● In reported speech, we usually change

- the tense of verb from the present to the past (eg. have - had)

- the pronouns of the listener and the speaker (eg. “You have to eat all” - Mom told me I

had to eat all.

- the time expressions (eg. now - then)

● We use said when there is no specific listener.

● We use told when there is a specific listener/listeners.

● We usually put a name or an object pronoun after told.

● Here are some time expressions we change in reported speech:

now then
today / tonight that day / night
tomorrow the next day / the following day
next year the following year
yesterday the day before / the previous day
last week/year the week/year before / the previous week/year
… days ago … days before

● We also change some place expression and demonstrative pronouns sometimes.
