Narrative Report on the Reading Progress of Grade II Pupils

1st Quarter
S. Y. 2022 – 2023

By virtue of DepEd Order No. 14 s. 2018, two (2) weeks after the opening of face-to-face classes, the
Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (PhilIRI) was simultaneously administered in Altura Elementary
School. This mainly aims to make every Filipino child a reader and a writer at his/her grade level.

In line, upon its administration to Grade Two (2) pupils, it was found out that among 26 pupils:
 42% are frustrated;
 27% are instructional; and
 31% are independent.

To effectively work the downside out, a background interview among frustrated learners were
conducted. It was found out that majority of the frustrated readers are under their relatives’ care, not their own
parents’. Additionally, they mentioned that they are just sporadically being taught may it be by their
godmother, cousin, and grandparents. With this, the teacher concludes that they close monitoring.

Presently, the entire grade level uses Marungko Approach for Filipino reading remediation, and Fuller
Approach for English. Noticeably, these approaches suit the needs and interest of the learners. Moreover,
during pair work, a ‘buddy-buddy’ system is being employed (1 independent reader: 1 frustrated reader); as
well as during collaborative work, mixed system is being practiced (1 independent reader: 1 instructional
reader: 1 frustrated reader). This way, the independent and instructional readers somehow pulled the frustrated
ones upward.

Furthermore, focusing on the independent and instructional readers, to sustain their reading
performance, they are being supplemented with reading materials with gradual increasing difficulty. During
discussions, they are also being challenged by the teacher to retell the story, explain an idea or reason out.
Through this, their fluency and comprehension is being tapped and enhanced.

Generally, by the next quarter, the teacher aims to lessen the frustrated readers by another 25% and
increase the independent readers by at least 10%.

Tips in writing the narrative:

- FIRST OF ALL, PRAY!!!!!! Haha
- Have a brief but meaningful introduction
- Use third person POV
- Do not mention counts. We already have the tally sheets. Discuss the data using
percentages.
