Shadowhunters for dummies

Hello my name is Estefanía and I’m going to explain the universe of the Shadowhunters without
telling you the plot of the books.

(Now, you may wonder why is an adult still reading these types of books that are considered for
young adults? I don't know, I just love this genre and maybe I have not finished maturing or I’m
just a book nerd).

The Chronicles of the Shadowhunters take place in the real world, but in a hidden world of the
normal one, which would be the world of the shadows, the plot revolves around different races
such as Nephilim, demons and underground that are divided into: vampires, werewolves, witches,
fairies.

The Nephilim, often known as Shadowhunters, they have fought demons and have lived
alongside Downworlders in the Shadow World for well over a thousand years. The goal of the
Nephilim is to fight, and someday end, the plague of demons on Earth. They are dispatched to
every place on Earth to fight against demon hordes. It could be said that they are the policemen of
the Shadow World.

A thousand years ago, shortly after 1000 AD, the Earth was invaded by hordes of demons. During
the times when the Crusades first began, particularly believed to be some time in the winter
months, a crusader named Jonathan called on Raziel. Jonathan begged Raziel to help save
humanity. Seeing the honesty and nobility of his wish, the angel obliged and mixed his blood with
that of Jonathan in the Mortal Cup, a mixture he let Jonathan drink. They soon became known as
Shadowhunters, after Jonathan, the first of their kind. Their children, and their children's children,
inherited their parents' angelic blood and became Nephilim themselves.

The Nephilim has a whole government called The Clave and their own country (which is hidden
thanks to spells) which is Idris.

The demons, well, they are the bad ones. Are malevolent, inter-dimensional beings that travel
between worlds, destroying everything in their path. They return to their home dimension, the
Void, when they die in their corporeal form., the void would be what we call as hell, I believe.

Downworlders are supernatural beings and hybrid creatures who inhabit the Shadow World.
Downworlder is the widely used term to refer to beings that are said to be part human and
part demon, or have a disease in demonic origin. Although they are demonic in origin and nature,
Downworlders possess human souls. They include werewolves, vampires, warlocks and faeries.

Werewolves, also known as lycanthropes or Children of the Moon, are a species of the
underground. Like vampires, werewolves are human beings infected with a demonic disease,
giving them the ability to transform into wolves and gain inhuman strength and enhanced abilities
such as hearing, smell, and speed.

Unlike werewolves, vampires or the Children of the Night, are considered "undead"; that is, their
bodies are no longer alive but their human souls reside in their animated bodies, remaining intact
and animated by demonic influence.
Warlocks, also known as Sons of Lilith, are the Underworld's immortal race descended from
demons and mundanes. They are the only Downworlders that can cast magic because they have
demon blood, unlike vampires and werewolves that were infected with demonic diseases.

The fairies, It is believed that they arose from the relationship between demons and angels,
Characterized by their longevity, their inability to lie and malevolence, their territorial domains
reside in the Kingdom of the Fairies.

The thing I love about this books is that the author created a very big universe with more than 20
books of which I have only read 11, this information is very basic since this world has many more
things and it was what attracted me from the beginning (except for certain main characters that I
never liked).
