SYNAPSE

1. Read the published book The Nurture Assumptions, by Judith Harris

2. State in not more than 2 paragraphs the thesis of Judith Harris
The two classical drives of human development have been thought to be nature and
nurture, genes and environment. The nurture assumption is that, aside from their genes, what
influences the way children develop is the way their parents bring them up. Some of us
assume parents are the whole environment, when in reality the environment includes much
more.
Moreover, there are two correlations that show up often enough that we can say they
are true,. First, parents who do a good job of managing and dealing with problems generally
have children who do the same. Second, child who are shown love and affection are likely to
grow up with cordial are likely to grow up with cordial, well-adjusted relationships. The
study shows also that a parent’s behaviour toward a child impacts how the child behaves in
the presence of the parent or in contexts that are associated with the parent and the patterns of
the behaviour acquired in the family are often different from the patterns of behaviour
acquired with peers. Although children do learn things from their parents, they do not only
learn things from their parents.

3. Watch the battle between nurture and nature, Ireen Gallego Romero, TEDxNTU.
What conclusions can you derive from the battle between nature and nurture?
We can’t fight our DNA, it is unavoidable, and nothing about human is innate and the
only matter is nurture and experiences, cancer does not cause of DNA. Genes doesn’t
only respond to each other but also to other things as well, environment we are living,
food that we eat and in decisions that we make. Likewise we are the canvas on which
nurture and nature collaborate. We are the products of their interaction
Reflection
1. Reflect on your early childhood, middle and late childhood days…
Like what I’ve learned in the previous lesson, development is lifelong and multimensional,
and I’m still in the process of development, but I can say that I obtain tasks expected of early,
middle, late childhood and adolescence. I experienced playing is life, and when I turned 12
there’s a lot of changes, from my physical appearance, to emotional, I became more conscious
about myself and when I reached 18, maturity comes. I became more sensitive, more logical
when it comes to decision making.
2. Having mastered the developmental tasks of early childhood middle and late
childhood and adolescence, reflect on what you should do as a teacher…
As a future teacher I can help them by giving them advises, giving or sharing my
experiences not only as their teacher but also the one who experienced being like them.
Likewise, engaging them to some activities that can help them to be mentally, physically,
socially and emotionally developed.
