CLASS XII Marks: 12
PHYSICS(code 1) Duration:35 min
1 An electric dipole of dipole moment of 6x10 C-m is kept in a uniform electric field of 104 N/C such
-7

that the dipole moment and the electric field are parallel. Calculate the potential energy of the
dipole. (2)
2 Derive the expression for the torque acting on an electric dipole, when it is held in a uniform
electric field. Identify the orientation of the dipole in the electric field, in which it attains a stable
equilibrium. (2)
3 State Gauss's law and use the same to obtain the expression for electric field due to a uniformly
charged infinite plane thin sheet. (3)
4 (a) Define electric flux. Is it a scalar or a vector quantity?
A point charge q is at a distance of d/2 directly above the centre of square of side d, as shown in
the figure.

Use Gauss's law to obtain the expression for the electric flux through the square.
(b) If the point charge is now moved to a distance 'd' from the centre of the square and the side of
the square is doubled, explain how the electric flux will be affected. (5)

PHYSICS(code 2) Duration:35 min
1 An electric dipole moment p is initially kept in a uniform electric field E such that p is perpendicular
to E. Find the amount of work done in rotating the dipole to a position at which p becomes
antiparallel to E. (2)
2 Two large parallel plane sheets have uniform charge densities +σ and – σ. Determine the electric
field (i) between the sheets, and (ii) outside the sheets. (2)
3 State Gauss's law. Show that for a charged spherical shell, the electric field outside the shell is, as if
the entire charge were concentrated at the centre. (3)
