1
Introduction

The development of satellite communication systems is

constrained by various external factors. The most important of
these are:

❑ The demand for the services that satellites can

economically provide
❑ The geometry of suitable orbits
❑ The available radio frequency allocations
❑ The cost of launching satellite of the necessary mass into
the desired orbit

2
Introduction

This link budget calculation takes into account several factors

such as:

❑ Absorption by the space media through which the satellite

signals propagate
❑ Various kind of noise sources
❑ The various design considerations of the earth station.

3
Introduction

The optimum radio frequency range of satellite

communications is determined technically by

❑ Absorption, scattering and refraction phenomena rising in

the atmosphere
❑ Galactic noise and thermal noise emitted by the
atmosphere
❑ The feasibility of constructing satellite antennas with gains
appropriate to the service area required.

4
General Link Design Equations
❑ In satellite communications links design, the important
calculation is the power received by the receiving station
(satellite receiver and the earth station).
❑ This calculation is similar to that of the simple radio link as
shown in the following Figure:
