DRIVING TIPS TO REMEMBER

DRIVING IS A VERY SERIOUS ACTIVITY. IMPROPER OR UNSAFE DRIVING CAN COST

LIVES, EVEN YOUR OWN.

DRIVING INVOLVES THREE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS:

• FOCUS
• JUDGEMENT
• CONTROL

Because of this, it is important to remember that you are RESPONSIBLE for what
your vehicle does barring three factors:-

• FORCES OF NATURE
• AN ACCIDENT (NOT CAUSED BY YOU)
• MECHANICAL FAILURE.

It is also important to remember that in an urgent or emergency situation,

RESPONSE IS BETTER THAN REACTION. Reaction is instinctive and natural, but
not always helpful in an emergency situation. Response is REACTION WITH
THOUGHT; the ability to think quickly to drive in a manner to avoid a potential
accident.

THERE ARE SIX THINGS THAT MAKE FOR A GOOD DRIVER.

• DISCIPLINE: The disciplined driver follows the road codes and remembers
there are other drivers present

• PATIENCE: This allows to you wait on the right moment to perform any task
that will not cause accidents to occur such as overtaking, lane crossing,
entry into and exit from gaps. And yes, it helps you keep your cool on the
road!!
• DISCRETION: The ability to take information and make a wise decision.
Different situations calls for different actions; always make sure that the
decision is positive and beneficial to yourself and other road users while
still obeying the rules of the road.

• FOCUS: Enables you to pay attention while driving. The three main things to
pay attention to are: - YOUR VEHICLE (and everything it does), OTHER
VEHICLES (have to make sure their driving style doesn’t adversely affect
you) and YOUR ENVIRONMENT (weather, people, animals, anything that
can affect your travel.)

• CONFIDENCE: FEAR DOES NOT BELONG ON THE ROAD. Confidence prompts

memory of your training and enables you to execute decisions and actions
conducive to safe driving.

• CONTROL: Important and imperative to safe driving….ALWAYS REMEMBER,

NO CAR CAN DRIVE BY ITSELF… YOU CONTROL THE MOVEMENT OF THE
VEHICLE AND ITS PRECISE MOTION AND SPEED!!!!
RULES OF CORNERING

1. The first thing to remember is your position of your

steering wheel from straight….that means no effect of
turn on your front wheels to the right and the left.
Memory of that position is important. Once the steering
is turned right or left, the amount of turn must be
remembered so as to know how much turn is needed to
return your front wheels to straight.

2. The more you turn into a particular direction, the more

the vehicle is going to swivel into that direction. More
turn gives a sharper angle while less turn gives a wider
angle.

3. The angle of the body of the car is important to

ascertain how much turn is needed for the corner.
REMEMBER, a car turns in an angle, so space must be
given to accommodate the body of the car especially
around tight corners.
SEVEN RULES OF REVERSING

1. NEVER REVERSE BLIND!!! Look where you going and go where

you looking!!!

2. The vehicle should be completely stopped before focusing

forward!!

3. Direction forward is direction backward; RIGHT IS RIGHT…LEFT

IS LEFT.

4. The rear of the car will go in the direction that the steering
wheel turns.

5. When reversing in a corner, the rear of the car should be close

to the inside of the corner.

6. ALWAYS REVERSE SLOWLY AND WITH EXTRA CONTROL OF

YOUR PACE, ESPECIALLY WHEN PARKING.

7. TO CENTER A VEHICLE, ALWAYS CHECK BOTH SIDES OF MIRROR

AND DIRECT THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE WITH MORE SPACE.
CORNERING ON THE ROAD

FOR RIGHT TURNS, THE VEHICLE SHOULD FILL THE CORNERING

SPACE ON THE LEFT SIDE TO AVOID CONTACT WITH THE CENTER
LINE OF THE ROAD.

FOR LEFT TURNS, THE FRONT OF THE CAR SHOULD ENTER THE
CORNER IN A SHARP ANGLE….CLOSER TO THE CENTER OF YOUR
OWN LANE. IN OTHER WORDS, PUT YOUR FRONT IN THE CORNER.

ALL CORNERS SHOULD BE ENTERED SLOWING DOWN TO A

SPEED THAT CAN BE EASILY CONTROLLED IN THE CORNER..ONE
SHOULD NEVER ENTER A CORNER ACCELERATING…EXCEPT IN
THE CASE OF UPHILL WIDE TURNS WHERE A MINIMAL AMOUNT
OF THROTTLE IS NEEDED TO GET MOVING.

• WHEN MOVING FROM A STANDSTILL, PLEASE ENGAGE THE

GAS PEDAL LIGHTLY TO MOVE …AND ADJUST AFTERWARDS
TO GO FASTWER OR SLOWER

• WHEN BRAKING, REMEMBER THERE CAN BE A VEHICLE

TAILING YOU, SO HARD BRAKING IS NOT ADVISED UNLESS
THERE IS AN EMERGENCY IN FRONT OF YOU.

• WHEN SHIFTING LANES TO AVOID OBSTRUCTIONS,

REMEMBER TO ALLOW THE OTHER LANE TO BE CLEARED
FIRST BEFORE PROCEEDING. AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, WHEN
PASSING THE SAID OBSTRUCTION, DO NOT TOTALLY TAKE
UP THE OTHER LANE.

• WHEN TRAVELLING UPHILL, DO NOT LIFT OFF THE GAS

COMPLETELY UNTIL THE CAR REACHES THE BROW OF THE
HILL.

• FOR ALL TURNS, BRAKE AND OR LIFT THROTTLE TO SLOW

DOWN BEFORE CORNERING. ON EXIT, CONTINUE BRAKING
WITH GRAUL RELEASE FOR DOWNHILL TURNS; FOR FLAT
TURNS, ACCELERATE OUT OF THE TURN UPON SPOTTING
THE EXIT; FOR UPHILL TURNS, GRADUALLY ACCELERATE TO
CONTINUE THE TURN THEN ACCELERATE HARDER ON
TOTAL EXIT.
DRIVING TIPS

 BEFORE DRIVING – AS A NOTE OF CAUTION – CHECK YOUR SURROUNDINGS

AND CONDITION OF YOUR VEHICLE WHEN ENTERING.

 PAY ATTENTION TO ANY LIGHTS ON YOUR DASHBOARD THAT MIGHT REMAIN

LIT AFTER THE ENGINE HAS STARTED AND IS STILL RUNNING (WITH THE
EXCEPTION OF THE HANDBRAKE AND SEAT BELT LIGHTS).

 PERIODICALLY CHECK THE TIRES FOR ADEQUATE PRESSURE AND THE OILS
AND OTHER FLUIDS IN YOUR ENGINE BEFORE STARTING OFF .

 BE MINDFUL THAT OTHERS DRIVERS WILL NOT ALWAYS ADHERE TO ROAD

CODES SUCH AS OBSTRUCTIONS, ROUNDABOUTS & STOP SIGNS . IN SUCH
CASES, IT IS ADVISED TO REDUCE SPEED AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE OTHER
DRIVER’S ACTIONS TO AVOID POTENTIAL ACCIDENTS OR MISHAPS .

 ALWAYS MAINTAIN THE SPEED LIMIT WHEN DRIVING. PAY PARTICULAR

ATTENTION TO RAINY , SANDY OR OTHER CONDITIONS WHERE TRAFFIC IS
SLOWED OR BLOCKED .

 PAY ATTENTION TO ANY NOISES OR SMELLS THAT MAY COME FROM THE
VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING – IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHAT IT MAY BE, ASK FOR
HELP OR CHECK A SERVICE REPAIRMAN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
 WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT, IF THE ONCOMING LIGHTS DAZZLE YOUR VISION ,
IT IS ADVISABLE TO SLOW DOWN OR STOP THE VEHICLE UNTIL YOUR VISION
IS CLEARED . KEEP IN MIND ALSO THE LIGHTS ON YOUR VEHICLE DO NOT
DAZZLE ONCOMING DRIVERS TOWARDS YOU.

 UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD THE USE OF CELL PHONES OR ANY OTHER

DEVICE TAKE PLACE WHILE DRIVING. ANY DISTRACTION FROM DRIVING
FOCUS CAN CAUSE THE WORST OF ACCIDENTS TO TAKE PLACE. ALWAYS STOP
THE VEHICLE (IN A SAFE PLACE AT NIGHT!!) TO ANSWER THE PHONE OR
RESPOND TO A TEXT .

 NEVER DRIVE DRUNK !!! NEVER!!! IF YOU FEEL YOU ARE UNABLE TO DRIVE,
HAVE SOMEONE ELSE DRIVE OR RETURN FOR THE VEHICLE. ALCOHOL
SEVERELY AFFECTS YOUR DRIVING ABILITY NEGATIVELY.

 WHEN STOPPING AT NIGHT, BE MINDFUL OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC BY

TURNING OFF YOUR LIGHTS SO NOT TO DAZZLE THE DRIVERS COMING
TOWARDS YOU. THIS CAN ALSO BE HELPFUL WHEN ENTERING OR LEAVING A
GAP.

 DO NOT PRACTICE OVERTAKING IN CORNERS , TOP OF HILLS, PEDESTRIANS

CROSSINGS , JUNCTIONS , IN FRONT OF BUSY GAPS AND NARROW ROADS .

 ALWAYS OCCUPY IN YOUR LANE OR AS MUCH AS ON YOUR “HAND” AS

POSSIBLE – ESPECIALLY WHEN GOING AROUND BLIND CORNERS.
 PAY ATTENTION TO ROAD SIGNS AND POLICE OFFICERS ON TRAFFIC DUTY.

 ALWAYS GIVE WAY TO EMERGENCY VEHICLES (FIRE TRUCKS & AMBULANCE).

 PRACTICE TO GIVE COURTESY ON THE ROAD (ALLOWING PEOPLE TO CROSS

THE ROAD, AS WELL AS GIVING WAY TO DRIVERS LEAVING GAPS AND
SLOWING DOWN FOR VEHICLES PASSING YOU .)
