GROUP ACTIVITY 1

COMPARING MOVEMENTS OF OBJECTS ON DIFFERENT SURFACES

PROBLEM: How does the kind of surface affect the movement of an object?

MATERIALS: Plank of wood or illustration board (about 1 m long)

A pile of books (to give your ramp height)
toy car face towel sandpaper
tape measure watch (timer) plastic paper

PROCEDURE
1. Gather your materials.
2. Pile up several books and place your plank of wood or cardboard (ramp) against them.
3. Now you are going to investigate how fast and how far the toy car travels when the ramp is covered with
different textures. (If your ramp is too steep, you may find it challenging to record your car’s travel time
because it will move too fast. A gentler slope is more practical.)
Carefully observe the test materials. Which do you think will create the most/least friction.
4. Record results.

RESULTS
MATERIAL Time taken to travel down the ramp (seconds) Distance travelled beyond the end of the ramp
(cm)
1st trial 2nd trial 3rd trial 1st trial 2nd trial 3rd trial
Face towel
Sandpaper
Plastic
Paper
Cardboard

CONCLUSION:
Make a conclusion based from the given problem. ( Answer the questions based on the result of your activity)

I/ We therefore conclude that….

1. Which material created the most friction?

2. Which material created the least friction?
3. What else do your results show?
