I. OBJECTIVE

In the end of 45- minutes lesson, pupil should be able to describe the motion of an object by tracing
and measuring its change in position ( distance travel) over a period of time.

II. CONTENT

SPEED, DISTANCE AND TIME

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

i. Books, rulers, marble, tape measure

ii. Video clips

IV. REFERENCES: Science beyond Borders Grade5 book

V. PROCEDURES

 ELICIT

1. Draw a simple map of your route from your house to school.

2. How do you travel to school? Do you ride a vehicle or not?

3. How far do you think is your house from your school?

4. How wil you be able to learn how far it is from school?

i. *Video clips: https://youtu.be/EGqpLug-sDk

 ENGAGE

 What do you think is an important factor in measuring motion?

“DISTANCE”

 What do you call a measure of the distance an object travels in a certain time?

“SPEED”

 EXPLORE

Divide the class into 3 groups.

 What you will need?

 3 books of equal thickness

 2 rulers of the same size
 Marbles
 Tape measures

 What to do?
1. Position the rulers together on a book with a distance from each other that would fit a
marble. The rulers would serve as a ramp for the marbles.

2. Realease the marble between the rulers. Measure in centimeters the distance cobered by the
marble. Take note of the time in seconds as the marble travels.

3. Repeat stpes 1 and 2 for the 2nd trial.

4. Put another book on top of the 1st book. Repeat steps 1 to 3.

5. Put another book on top of the two book. Repeat steps 1 to 3.

6. Record your measurements in the table.

 EXPLAIN

Based on the activity, discuss in the front of the class the result of your activity. 1 representative each
group.

1. What setup resulted in the shortest distance traveled by the marble? Why do you think the
marble traveled the shortest with this set up?

2. What setup resulted in the longest distance traveled by the marble? Why do you think the marble
traveled the longest with this set up?

3. How can measuring distance help us in comparing things in motion?

4. What is the effect of height on the distance a marble travels from the ramp?

5. What is the speed of the marbles in Trial 1 and 2?

 ELABORATE

DISTANCE is the measure of how far or near two points are from one another. It can be measured
using different ways such as time, landmark or body parts.

SPEED is a measure of the distance an object travels in a certain time.

 EFFECTS OF SPEED AND TIME ON DISTANCE

The distance covered by a moving ogject is affected by its speed or the measure of how fast it
moves. The faster it moves, the shorter time it takes for it to cover a certain distance. Opposite to
that, the slower it moves, the longer it takesfor it to cover the same dsitance. Thus, in a given time,
the faster an object moves, the greater the distance that it cover; and the slower it moves the less
the distance that it cover

SPEED can be calculated by dividing the distance covered by an object in motion by the time
spent to cover the distance.
This can be expressed as

Speed= Distance
Time

Example:
Speed= 100m = 10.44 m/s
9.58 s

Another way:

Time= Distance OR Distance= Speed x Time

Speed
 QUESTIONS:

1. You went on a car trip to a town in Ilocos. It took you four hours to travel a distance of 284
kilometers. What was your average speed?

2. You covered a distance of 120 kilometers at a speed of 60km/hr. How long was your trip?

 EVALUATION
Write T if the statement is true. If it is false, change the underlined word to make the statement
correct.

1. The measure of how far or near two points are from one another is called distance.

2. In science, distance should always be exact, measured accurately and based on any unit of
measurement.

3. Speed can be calculated by multiplying the distance covered by an object in motion by the
amount of time it used to cover the distance.

4. Meter is the standard unit of measurement used for distance or length.

5. Time is a way of measuring how quickly something is moving or being done, or something
moving fast.

 EXTEND

Show the computation.

1. Ronilyn walked 6km at a speed of 3km/hr. How long did Ronilyn take?

2. A truck traveled 100km/hr. for 2 hours. How far did the truck traveled?
