Title of the Campaign: Ibida Kalusugan ng Batang Ina: Health and Nutrition
Campaign for Teenage Pregnancy.
Rationale:
Bearing a child inside the womb is a critical state for the reproductive age of women,
especially if the mom is yet to be a lady. As the child grows inside the womb, the mother
grows also which requires a greater nutritional need. Thus, making them both
nutritionally at risk in a much urgent manner. Therefore, here are 3 reasons why the
said campaign needs to push through sooner than we think.
1. Continuous Rise in Number of Teenage Pregnancy in The Country.
- Prior to COVID-19, the Philippines had one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy
in Asia. According to the World Bank data on Adolescent Fertility, in 2017 there are 54
births per 1,000 women ages 15-19. A spike in number have seen during the pandemic
year 2020 where it became 56 births per 1,000 women from the same age range.
2. Impending consequences regarding maternal and infant morbidity during
teenage pregnancy.
- Adolescent mothers (those between the ages of 10 and 19) have greater rates of
eclampsia, puerperal endometritis, and systemic infections than women (those between
the ages of 20 and 24), and their child have higher rates of low birth weight, preterm
birth, and serious neonatal conditions
3. Poor Nutritional Status of Filipino Women Adolescents
- Based on the results of the Expanded National Nutrition Survey: 2019, stunting and
wasting among adolescent women ages 10-19 has a prevalence rate of 24.9% and
8.9% respectively which is considered a moderate to mild public health concern. In
addition, nutritionally at-risk pregnant women ages <20 years has a 32.6% prevalence
rate which remains a serious public health concern. On top of that, presence of anemia
among pregnant women remains a moderate public health concern at 23.0%.
