Today we will use models and

formulas to solve real world

problems involving area and
perimeter of rectangles.
Help Build Summer’s Fence!
Summer needs a place to play so Ms.Megan wants to build a fence around
her lawn. How many feet of fencing will Ms. Megan need to build a fence
around her lawn for Summer?
Will you need to find the area or perimeter? 9 ft.

Formula 1
P= side + side + side + side
=9 + 9 + 5 + 5
= 28 feet

Formula 2
P= (2 x L) +(2 x W)
= (2 x 9) + (2 x 5)
= 18 + 10

Ms. Megan wants to put down new grass for Summer to play
in outside as well. How many feet of grass is needed to cover
the entire lawn?
Will you need to find the area or perimeter?

Perimeter
Perimeter: the distance around the outside of a shape.

Formula: is a mathematical rule

Perimeter = S + S + S + S or Perimeter = (2xl) + (2xw)

You can find the perimeter of a rectangle or square by adding the

sides together.

Area: is the measure of the number of unit squares
needed to cover a flat surface without gaps or
overlaps.
Square Unit: Is a square that is 1 unit long and 1 unit wide.

One way to find the area of a figure, count the number of

unit squares inside the figure.

Mike is decorating his house for Christmas. He wants to
wrap Christmas lights around his window. How many inches
of lights will he need to surround the entire window frame?

P=s+s+s+s
= 24 + 24 + 36 + 36

Sydney is painting 2 walls in her bedroom. Each
wall has a height of 9 feet and a width of 12 feet.
What is the total area of the 2 walls Sydney must
paint?
