Understanding Square Roots and Squares

The document discusses square roots. It defines squaring as raising a number to the second power, and provides examples of 22 = 4 and 32 = 9. It states that the square root is the inverse operation of squaring, and that the square root of 16 is 4 because 4 x 4 = 16. It introduces the radical sign used to notate square roots, with the number or variable inside called the radicand. It notes that when the square root of a number is a whole number, it is considered a perfect square. The document provides a chart of perfect squares and notes that negative signs outside of a radical keep the answer negative. It recommends practicing and memorizing perfect squares.

Square Roots

You already know about squaring – it is raising a number to the second power.
For instance, 22 = 4 because 2 • 2 = 4 and 32 = 9 because 3 • 3 = 9.
The inverse
to make the number.

is equal to 16?” And you would remember the multiplication fact 4 • 4 is equal to 16. Therefore, 4 is the
square root of 16 because 4 times 4 is 16.
The symbol for taking the square-root is called a radical. A radical sign looks like a check mark with a number
or variable inside. The number or variable under the radical sign is called the radicand.

It is used like this:

When you take the square root of a number and the answer is a whole number then you have a perfect square.

Negative Signs with Square Roots

If there is a negative sign on the outside of the radical then the negative stays with the answer.

Sometimes, the answer to a square root problem is not a whole number. You will learn more about this as
you explore square roots further, but for now, focus on memorizing your perfect squares. Learning your
perfect squares will make solving math problems much easier in the future!
