Structure of the Written Assignment

1. All written assignments of all working groups shall, at least, have


the following items in their respective final table of contents:
a) Abstract;

b) Introduction;

c) Objective of the study & methodology;

d) Main body of the written assignment divided in different chapters;

e) Case study or studies; as a chapter;

f) Comparative table & analysis; as a chapter;

g) Conclusions & recommendation; as a chapter

a. conclusions; separately as a sub-chapter; NB: This part shall summarize the whole
substantive & main ideas of the written assignment;
b. recommendations; separately as a sub-chapter; NB: under this part of the work, the group
is expected to recommend its respective sound future practice to be avoided or at least to
minimize the occurrence of any such similar problems and the enhanced application of
some good practice under consideration, if any;

h) Exhaustive list of source materials consulted (i.e., bibliography) for the development of the written
assignment; the bibliography shall observe the rules of citation of research at the university level;

i) Any other items as the working group may deem necessary;

2. Literature Review
1.1. All working groups are required to identify & review all relevant literature supportive of their
respective written assignment;
1.2. All working groups shall consider the Reference Guide prepared & issued by the Instructor;
1.3. The Reference Guide is merely providing the minimum level of reference to be made by all
working groups;
1.4. Standard conditions of contracts are not literature;

3. Project Context
1.1. To contextualize the discussion of the respective written assignment, all working groups are
encouraged to identify & consider a specific project context in their respective written
assignments;
1.2. The project context may include all or one of the following:
1.2.1. building related projects; like
a. commercial building projects;
b. institutional building projects;
c. non-commercial (like residential) building projects;
d. industrial building projects

1.2.2. Water development related projects


1.2.3. Energy related projects
1.2.4. Transportation related projects
1.2.5. Communication related development projects; radio; television; telecommunications
related;
1.2.6. The development project so considered shall have its full profile focusing on the
respective title of the written assignment;
4. Case Study
a. Each working group is expected & encouraged to include in its written assignment relevant
actual construction project cases to support its analysis;
b. The identity or the names of the parties (employer & contractor…) may not be disclosed but to
be designated as x & y, respectively, for example;
c. The case study shall have its full profile focusing on the title of the written assignment;
d. If a working group finds a case study managed and/or resolved based on another standard
conditions of construction contract, the working group is required to reflect its opinion how the
case were managed and/or resolved based on the said MDB-FIDIC and/or PPA standard
conditions of construction contract;
5. Conditions of Construction Contracts
a. Based on the objective of the written assignment, each working group is imperatively expected
to consider, mention & analyze the specific & relevant clauses & sub-clauses of the relevant
conditions of construction contract as related to its respective written assignment;
b. The relevant conditions of construction contract to consider for the current written assignment
by all working groups shall be MDB-FIDIC (2006) & PPA (2011) standard Conditions of
Construction Contracts;
6. Applicable Laws
a. Based on the objective of the written assignment, each working group is expected to identify, to
mention & to analyze the specific & relevant articles or provisions of the applicable law(s) as
related to its respective written assignment;
b. By Applicable Law it means any relevant Ethiopian law (including international law) applicable to
the written assignment like the Civil Code or Commercial Code and/or any other relevant laws
like proclamations or regulations;
 Verbatim long quotation of contract clauses from the relevant standard or and/or particular
conditions of construction contracts and/or legal articles or provisions from the applicable law
(s) and/or from any literature without any justification or purpose is prohibited;
 Otherwise, it may lead to the reduction of the quality of the written assignment & there with to
the reduction of the relevant working group’s evaluation point;
7. Comparative Table
 All working groups are required to present the similarity and/or differences of the MDB-FIDIC
(2006) & the PPA (2011) Conditions of Contract, and the applicable law (s) with respect to their
respective title;
 Such comparison exercise may be presented in table format and shall form an integral part of
the written assignment and not as an appendix;
 The status of the said comparison table shall be before the conclusions & recommendations
part;
