Group Assignment :
1. (Mathematical Formulation only): A manufacturer is producing three kind of ornaments, called O 1, O2,
and O3, by mixing three different metals: iron, copper and zinc. The following table contains the amount (in
gram) of each metals required to produce a unit of each of the ornaments.

Amount (in g) of the metals needed

Required per unit the ornament: Available quantity
Metals of the metals (in g)
O1 O2 O3
Iron 20 25 10 450
Copper 25 35 45 640
Zink 50 15 30 720
Profit /unit $ 50 $30 $42

The problem is to find the units of each product (ornament) to be manufactured using the available
metals that maximizes profit. Write the linear programming formulation of the problem and solve it
using Excel solver.

2. Solve each of the following problems using the graphical method.

(a (d
) (b) (c) )

3. (Mathematical Formulation of the Problem and Solving it): A manufacturer produces two types of items,
denoted by I1 and I2, using three different machines M 1, M2 and M3. I1 must be processed by M1 and M2;
while I2 needs to be processed by M 2 and M3. The processing time needed per unit of each item is 1 hour
on each of the required machines. The machines M 1, M2 and M3 can serve at most for 6 hours, 8 hours
and 5 hours per day, respectively. The profit per unit of I 1 and I2 is $20 and $30, respectively. It is
required to determine the amount of each type of the items to be produced per day in order to maximize
daily profit.

(a) Write the linear programming formulation of the problem.

(b) Using the graphical method, find the optimal solution (optimal units of each item to be produced
per day) and the maximum daily profit.
