Task 1 Read the passage and underline the reflection part which illustrates the
theme of the story.
An Account of a School Activity
It was a bit chilly last night though it was already spring. However, on the
playground in our school, you just felt hot and excited. Yes, the long-awaited show of
the art festival finally would raise its curtain.
At about 7 p.m., the playground was already packed with audience. Seated in
bright lights, we could see smiling faces everywhere. They talked and laughed as if
they had never been so happy.
As soon as the hosts declared the show open, the performers beat the drums and
the atmosphere reached its first peak. Throughout the show, we kept waving our light
sticks, cheering and applauding. Our peers impressed us with their great talents and
creativity. We just couldn’t help feeling proud of them. How I wish I could be one of
those who were standing on the stage, showing their youth and passion!
No doubt the art festival is a platform for us to display our talents. It is on this
stage that we have the chance to fly our dreams and release our vigor. Please
remember: give us a chance, and we are sure to return you a big surprise!

Task 2 Read the two passages and fill in the blanks with reflections.
Passage 1
A Bicycle Lesson

One day, my parents took a big bicycle and a mini one outside and taught me
how to ride. Father jumped on his bicycle, showing me the way to ride a bicycle and
mother kept telling me some basic skills. Then, it was my turn to have a try.
To be honest, I was very nervous. Touching the handle, I could feel my hands
trembling hard and my heart beating fast. Noticing my nervousness, my parents
smiled at me while saying something encouraging. It really took great courage for me
to sit on the seat and move forward. Unluckily, I lost my balance, fell off the bicycle
and skinned my knee. “I would never learn to ride a bicycle!” I cried. My father came
up and patted me on the shoulder, saying “Take it easy! Never say die before you
finally do it! Try again and we’ll be with you!” Though I failed several times, I finally
succeeded with my parents’ help and encouragement.

Passage 2
A True Friend
When I was in Junior high school, Zhang was not a good choice to make friends
with because he had dark skin and looked tough. I didn’t like to play nor to talk with
him, always keeping a distance between us.
One afternoon several young adults stopped me on my way home and bullied me
into giving them some money. Just then, it was Zhang who stood out, shouted loudly
and drove them away. I was very much moved when he came up and comforted me
with a smile.

I began to watch him closely. Little by little, I found out he was a very nice boy,
always ready to help others, whether classmates or strangers. He had a gentle heart
under his dark skin and tough appearance. Of course we became friends finally.
