______________ we went to Yosemite for our first vacation. _____________ my

mother and father sat outside the cabin reading the newspaper, I played near the river
with the bear, dipping his furry feet into icy water. He was my best friend; I took him
everywhere, could not fall asleep at night without him. ______________ the current
swept him out of my hands. I ran screaming and crying to my father, “Daddy, hurry,
Bear’s gone down the river.” ________________, he’d tossed his newspaper aside
and followed me to the place where I last saw Bear. Leaping from boulder to boulder
he seemed to be flying down the creek, his red flannel shirt billowing like a flag,
finally disappearing from view. ________________, drenched and disheveled, he had
Bear in his hands. ________________ I had never been conscious of loving my father.
I wonder if he realized then just how thoroughly Bear had taken his place. And if he
knew what a disaster it would be for both of us if he’d returned empty-handed.

Fortunately, I caught the plane to New York and everything seemed to have
settled down. But only I myself knew what a frustrating and exciting experience I had
early this morning, I almost missed the plane!
I arrived at the airport three hours in advance. Suddenly I was horrified to find that
I had left one of my suitcases at the hotel. Without a second thought, I jumped into a
taxi and explained my situation to the driver. Then we sped off towards my hotel …

In the end, we managed to get the suitcase and then raced back to the airport.
How lucky I was that I made it to my plane on time.

My heart is full of excitement as Dad and I line up for this year’s Charity Run. It
is my first race. I’ve been working out and I feel so great. I know I’m ready. Bang!
We’re off. As we run side by side, Dad is panting, “Coop, don’t forget … how hard
you worked … to get here.”
Yes. Dad and I had started training several months ago. Each day in our early
morning walks, we’d go faster and faster. Slowly, the walks turned into jogging. Then
they finally turned into running. At first, I had a tough time keeping up with Dad, so
sometimes he would slow down for me.

Suddenly, I hear Dad panting beside me. He tells me to go on. So I take off like a
racehorse roaring ahead. ... I sprint across the finish line. The big race clock shows
1:57:15. I feel so proud of myself!
