What is a Proximity Sensor
What is a proximity sensor?
Inductive Proximity Sensors are used solely for the
detection of metallic objects. – Metal Detector

Where do you use a proximity switch?

On any machine or electrical installation to detect
metal and send a signal back to the control circuit
or PLC

What is a Proximity Sensor
What material must pass in front to switch?
Metal – sensing distances given are worked on
mild steel Magnetic fields from coil
Target (mild steel)

Operating principals?
As the metal object approaches the proximity
sensor the magnetic field length is shortened
through the target
Then it switches

What is a Proximity Sensor
Why are there different front surfaces sizes?
The bigger the front surface the longer the sensing
distance on mild steel

What material are the bodies made of?

Many different material – chromed brass, plastic
and stainless steel

What is a Proximity Sensor

What is meant by a flush proximity?

The outer casing of the proxy is metal to the front
surface and can be put flush or level into a metal
plate or guards

What is meant by a non-flush proximity?

The back part of the proximity is metal or plastic but
the front sides are plastic

What is a Proximity Sensor
What type of switching contacts do you get?
Normally Open (NO) Corresponds to a sensor
whose output changes to the closed state when an
object is present in the operating zone.
Normally Closed (NC) Corresponds to a sensor
whose output changes to the open state when an
object is present in the operating zone.
Complementary Outputs (NO + NC)
Corresponds to a sensor with a normally closed
output and a normally open output.

What is a Proximity Sensor

The standard IEC 60947-5-2 defines various sensing

distances, such as:
Nominal Sensing Distance (Sn)
Real Sensing Distance (Sr)
Usable Sensing Distance (Su)
Assured Sensing Distance (Sa)
Differential Travel (H)

What is a Proximity Sensor

How does the sensing distance change with other

metals?
For the calculation of the assured operating distance for
different operating conditions, one must take into account
the correction coefficients that influence it.
