LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT

Background of the Study

Waste management or waste disposal is all the activities and actions

required to manage waste from its inception to its final disposal. This includes
amongst other things, collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste
together with monitoring and regulation. It also encompasses the legal and
regulatory framework that relates to waste management encompassing
guidance on recycling.

Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) is
comprehensive waste prevention, recycling, composting, and disposal program.
An effective ISWM system considers how to prevent, recycle,
and manage solid waste in ways that most effectively protect human health
and the environment.

Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) can be defined in many

ways but it is probably best to think of it as a way of using a combination of
waste management techniques to treat the different types of waste in ways that
are environmentally, financially and socially sustainable. ISWM should be
based on the waste hierarchy and focus on using the 3 Rs while finding a
suitable way of dealing with the remaining waste. It also depends on
collaboration among all the organizations and individuals involved in waste
management.

Aside from the zero-waste approach, environmentalists also promote

integrated waste management(IWM).In IWM, Several methods of handling
wastes which are implemented in many countries are combined. The 3R’s is
followed by waste segregation, which is the separation of trash into
biodegradables and nonbiodegradables

Vermi-composting which uses earthworms can be used to improve soil

quality. Earthworms digest organic waste faster. However, not all
biodegradable wastes should be composted. Old papers such as school
materials and newspapers are better at the materials recovery facilities or junk
shops. They are then sold to factories which recycle them.

Garbage incineration is not the same as open burning. Incineration

makes use of high temperature furnaces or ovens which are strictly controlled,
monitored and maintained. An incineration plant is a large structure complete
with facilities for mixing garbages, like furnace for burning, smokestacks for
gaseous emissions, and equipments for collecting ash and noncombustible
products.

Objectives:

To describe the integrated waste management.

Activity 1

Terms to Remember

Match the descriptions on Column A with the term on Column B

Column A Column B
1.Uses earthworm to improve soil quality. A.Biodegradable
2.Natural fertilizers mixed with soil materials and B.Composting
rich nutrients ideal for plant growth
3.Wastes that can be easily decomposed like left over C.Incineration
foods.
4.It uses high temperature furnaces or ovens that D.Landfill
are strictly controlled, monitored, and maintained.
5.An open pit used as disposal site. E.Nonbiodegradable
F.Vermi-composting

Activity 2

Fact or Bluff

Directions: Write FACT if the statement is correct and BLUFF if the statement
is false.

___________1.Biodegradable wastes are those that can be decayed by bacteria

and other organisms.
___________2. Industrial wastes usually contain water, organic solvents and
other solid chemicals.

___________3. Infectious waste from hospitals and those which come from
mining activities do not fall under solid wastes.

___________4. Reduce,reuse,recycle is synonymous with the zero-waste

approach.

___________5.An incineration plant is a large structure complete with facilities

for keeping the garbages.

___________6.Waste incineration also produces desirable substances like dioxin

and toxic ash.

___________7.R.A. 9003 mandates the use of sanitary landfills as final disposal

sites for solid wastes. A suitable site for a sanitary landfill requires the most
stringent conditions.

___________8. Pollution of groundwater is the most significant hazard from a

sanitary landfill.

___________9.People who work in sanitary landfills must be well-protected.

___________10.Open burning of garbage is allowed to ensure the spread of toxic

emissions in the atmosphere.
