Philippines.ThesefriarscontrolledtheeducationalsysteminthePhilippinesandtheywereable
toowndifferentschoolscomprisingfromtheprimaryleveltothetertiarylevelsofeducation.
Thepeoplewhotookchargeinteaching,implementationoftherulesandregulationsandthe
monitoringofstudentswereassignedtothemissionariesduringthattime.Theteachingsofthe
Catholicreligionwereemphasizedtothelevelsofeducationintheschoolsownedbythefriars.
Intheprimarylevel,theyweretaughtoftheChristianDoctrines,howtoreadSpanishbooksand
alittleofthenative’slanguage.Intheuniversities,ScienceandMathematicswerenotveymuch
introducedtothestudents.InsteadofSpanish,studentsweretaughthowtospeakand
understandLatin.Discriminationduringtheearlytimeswasverymuchutilized.Thisisbecause
theschoolsbeforewereexclusiveonlyfortheSpaniards.Filipinoswereonlyabletoattend
schoolinthelate19thcentury.Someschoolsalsolimitedtheirlodgingtothesonsofwealthy
Filipinofamilies.FriarshardlydiscriminatedFilipinosbecauseeveniftheywereabletoenter
schoolandstudy,thefriarsbelievedthatFilipinoswouldnotstillbeabletomatchtheirskills
andtheywillonlylearnfastiftheywouldstrictlyimplementdisciplinaryactionsorthemeansof
applyingcorporalpunishment.Also,duringtheirtime,theschoolsforboysandgirlswere
separated.Schoolsfortheboyswerethefirstonesthatwereestablished.
