EDUCATION SYSTEM IN THE PHILIPPINES ON RIZAL'S TIME VERSUS NOW

The 19th century has brought a big impact in the lives of the Filipinos as it pave way to the
start of an extensive growth of the economy. It was also the period of significant social changes
such as the removal of slavery and massive urbanization. Philippines became one of the richest
country in Asia in terms of trade and economic structure during this time which is why a
number of families were able to send their sons to Europe and have education. Public
education also rised and even the churches ruled it. Students learned how to read, write and
speak in Spanish. Highly educated Filipinos or the ones who studied in Europe arose what to
become as the Propaganda Movement. That was the start of our revolt to our colonizers. They
were known as the Illustrados. One of them was Jose Rizal who used his written works like the
Noli Me tangere and El Filibusterismo as tools to fight and bring up the cruelty of the Spaniards.

Truly, education played a big role in achieving freedom. Without education I guess we will still
be following the wrong doings of our colonizers. We will still be in their hands. We must be
thankful that there become our Filipino heroes who saved us and gave us the freedom that we
were longing for a long time. We shall value education because this is a great weapon in
everything. I have realized that the beginning of the Philippine Education system has been
through a lot. We have indulged in various systems depending on the recent colonizers and also
because of several historical events that the Philippines has been through. The educational
system in the past was geared towards the needs of the people. Separate lessons are taught
between girls and boys. Although they also focused on the reading and writing and even the
learning of arithmetic, it still has its limitations.

The history of the system actually paved the way for the present generation to experience
quality and equal access to education. In fact, we first handedly experienced the reform of
education ssystem. Drawn from the different experiences evident by our History, I believe that
change is necessary and essential to meet the demands and needs of the changing world.
Today, education is more like a reflection of what has been seen on the education system
during Rizal's time. It's still merely a fight for freedom. Freedom from everything that's keeping
us suffer.
