Unit 9
Hypothesis Testing of a Single
Population Mean and Proportion
‘What this unit is all about
This unit contains exercises and solutions based on Unit 9 of the Business Statistics
Module (STAT102). The unit covers methods of testing a claim or assertion about a
population mean or proportion

Q1. Ina personnel management meeting, the average time taken by the workers to
reach the factory every morning was said to be 41.3 minutes. Can this figure be
substantiated by the result of a survey on 60 workers of that factory who took an
average of 39.7 minutes to get to work, with a standard deviation of 8.2 minutes?
Use a = 0.01.
Q2. A manufacturer guarantees that a certain ball bearing has a mean outside di-
ameter of 2.1654 centimetres with a standard deviation of 0.0008 centimetres.
Suppose a random sample of nine bearings from a large lot of these bearings has
a mean outside diameter of 2.1664 centimetres. Test at the 1% level of signifi-
cance whether this lot meets the manufacturer's guarantee on the mean outside
diameter.
Q3. A local television advertises that at least 50% of the viewing audience tune in to
its six o'clock new programme. A’company is considering advertising in this time
slot and wants to test the validity of this claim. The company plans a telephone
survey of 400 television viewers to test the station’s claim, If 176 persons in the
survey watch the station’s programme, should the company accept the station’s
claim? Test at the 0.05 level of significance.
Q4. Ndapasuwa company manufactures steel bars. The bars are normally distributed
with a standard deviation of 0.0610 metres. ‘The production process turns out
steel bars with an average length of at least 0.8534 metres when the process is
working properly. A sample of 25 bars is selected from the production line and an
average length of 0.7407 metres was obtained. The company wishes to determine
whether the machine needs ariy adjustment. If the company wishes to test the
hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance, what decision would it make?

A census done by the Ministry of Primary Education in a certain couutyy in the
rural areas revealed that on’ average there are 55 children per primary school
teacher. However, a study carried out by the teachers trade union in 26 rural
schools shows a mean of 58 children per teacher, with a standard deviation of 4

An electricity company estimates that 60% of its customers pay their electricity
bills within 15 days of delivery. A random sample of 400 Dills indicated that 180
were paid within 15 days of delivery. At the 0.10 level of significance, is there
evidence that. the company’s estimate is incorrect?
