The electric eel's body consists of
three main organs that produce the
500v shock that stuns prey with a
current of up to 1 amp. Including
Sach’s organ, Hunter’s organ, and
the Main organ. These organs
contain cells called electrolytes.

They are flattened disks.

When an electric eel sense its prey it
sends a system through its nervous
system alerting the electrolytes. The
nerve fibers connect to the
electrolytes on one side only. Then
the signal causes positively charged
sodium ions to flood into the cells.
The voltage produced by each cell is
small, around 150 mV. Because the
electrolytes are stacked in series they
build voltage, and in parallel builds
current, like cells in a battery. The
eels don't actually bite their prey and send a shock, they actually send a wave of

voltage through the water to stun prey.
