AVERAGES
The arithmetic mean, the median, the mode and the weighted mean are some
common measures of central tendency.
MATHEMATICS 7 Mean
The mean, also called the arithmetic mean, is the most commonly-used
average. It can be calculated by dividing the sum of all data by the total number of
Statistics data.
mean=
∑ of all values
number of values
Week 3 and 4
The mean calculated for the sample data is denoted by x (read as “x bar”), and
the mean calculated for population data is denoted by μ (Greek letter mu).
Learning Targets
MELC Week 3 and 4 MATH FOCUS
In this module, you will learn about statistics. Mean for Ungrouped Data
The mean for ungrouped data is obtained by dividing the sum all values by

Example 1: The heights of five students are 158 cm, 158 cm, 160 cm, 162 cm, and
163 cm.
a. Find the mean height of these students.
b. Another student of height 177 cm is added to the group. Find the
new mean height.
Solution

b. From (a), the heights of the original five students add up to 801 142, 148, 149, 149, 150

The mean height of the six students There are five observations in the data set. Consequently, n=5 and

Hence, the median is the value of the third term in the ranked data.
Median Therefore, the median is 149.
The median is another commonly used average. When a set of data is arranged b. Arranging the data (in kg) in order of magnitude, we have:
in ascending or descending order, the datum in the middle is the median of the data 67, 62, 61, 57, 54, 48
set.
There are 6 values in the data set. Hence, n=6 and the position of
Form the definition of the median, it divides a ranked data set into two equal n+1

parts. The calculation of the median consists of the following two steps: 2
1. Rank the data set in increasing (or decreasing) order.
2. Find the middle term. The value of this term is the median. Hence, the median is given by the median of the 3rd and the 4th
values in the ranked data.
The position of the middle term in data set with n values obtained as follows:
n+1 61+ 57
position of the middleterm= Therefore, the median ¿ =59 kg

Thus, we can redefine the median as follows:

Mode
If the given data represents a population, replace n by N. The mode is the value that occurs with the highest frequency in a data set.
If the number of observations in a data set is odd, then the median is given by
the value of the middle term in the ranked data. If the number of observations is even, Example 3 In the following data set: 20, 21, 21, 24, 25, 27, number 21 occurs
then the median is given by the average of the values of the two middle terms. twice and each of the remaining values occurs only once. Because 21
occurs with the highest frequency, it is the mode. Therefore, the mode

MATHEMATICS 7– STATISTICS (QUARTER 4 – WEEK 3 & 4)

Example 5 Six strains of bacteria were tested to see how long they could remain
alive outside their normal environment. The time in minutes is
recorded: 3,4, 6, 8, 9, 11. Find the mode.

Solution Since each value occurs only once, there is no mode.

Example 6 The prices of the same brand of television set in eight stores are found
to be:
₱ 14,950 ₱ 14,860 ₱ 15,030 ₱14,950
₱ 14,700 ₱ 15,050 ₱ 14,700 ₱ 14,990
Find the mode.

Solution In this data set, each of the two values ₱ 14,950 and ₱ 14,700 occurs
twice and each of the remaining values occurs only once. Therefore,
this data set has two modes.
₱ 14,950 and ₱ 14,700

INTRODUCTION TO MEASURES OF VARIATION

The Range
The simplest measure of dispersion is called range. It is the difference
between the highest (maximum) and the lowest (minimum) values in a data set. In the
form of equation:

MATH FOCUS
Range=Largest value−Smallest value

Example 7 Find the range for the following data.

9.77 11.35 12.46 13.80 15.47 17.48 18.37
18.47 16.61 20.72 21.49 22.47 31.50 38.16

Solution Range=Largest value−Smallest value

¿ 39.16−9.77=28.39
