Welcome to Morning Kids.

Hello and welcome to Morning Kids indeed.
My name is Virginia and I'm so happy that you've found some time in your day to join us.
We're always so grateful to have you here no matter what time of the day it is.
Now I'm wondering are you ready to start learning about the world around us and have
some fun along the way.
Tell us about today.
Well that's always a great place to start.
Today is Tuesday the 16th of May, 2023.
Should we sound out the word Tuesday together? We haven't done that for a short while.
Let's give it a go.
To you as day.
Tuesday.
And if you like drawing pictures and making art then you'll be happy to know that today is
drawing day.
It's a day when people from all ages can pick up a crayon or a pencil or some chalk or a
texter and make beautiful drawings of all kinds of things like animals, flowers, people or
anything at all really.
This is a day to let your imagination run wild and create something really special and unique
and the best part is that you can draw whatever you want in any way that you want.
Drawing day is about having fun with your drawings and enjoying how creative you can be
and remembering to always be proud of all the artworks that you create.
It's tasty Tuesday.
You know what that means? It's the day of the week where we get to open up our fridges
or the cupboards or even look in the pantry to learn more about food.
And today we're going to learn more about a food that I'll bet you eat at least once a week
and that food is pasta.
Pasta is a food that's been around for hundreds of years.
It's a very popular food in the country of Italy and people there eat it almost every day.
But it's also eaten in many other countries around the world too.
Pasta is made by mixing flour and water and eggs together into a dough.
The dough is then made into different shapes like spaghetti and rigatoni and macaroni and
some pasta is flat while other types of pasta are round or twisted and there's even pasta that's
cut into shapes and wrapped around a filling like meat such as ravioli and tortellini.
Mmm.
There are just so many types of pasta.
In fact there are more than 300 different pasta shapes and sizes and every single one of
them has its own special name.
Water is pretty easy to cook.
You just put it in some boiling water with some salt for about 10 minutes until it's soft and
ready to eat.
One of the great things about pasta is that it can be made with lots of different sauces and
ingredients.
Some people like to eat pasta with cheesy sauces or meat sauces like meatballs and
vegetable sauces or even just olive oil and garlic on their own.
A lot of people like to eat pasta with tomato based sauces like bolognese.
Now I wonder how many of our morning kids friends love eating spaghetti bolognese and
getting it all over their chin on the way.
Pasta is very high in something called carbohydrates which gives you lots of energy to zoom
around and have fun.
It also has protein in it which is good for muscles and if you eat whole meal pasta that's high
in fibre which is great for our tummies.
Do you have a favourite pasta shape that you love to eat? Maybe it's spaghetti or maybe it's
the bow pasta.
My personal favourite is tortellini.
Mmm.
Maybe I can have some for dinner tonight.
What's going on? Well today's news story is about a man who's travelling around Australia
in a special scooter for a very special cause.
Bevan Kearsley is from Queensland and Bevan has a condition called paraplegia which
means that his legs don't work the same way as other people's.
And that's because part of his body called his spinal cord was hurt when he was in a
motorcycle accident many years ago.
At the time of the accident Bevan had to do lots of exercises and work on his other muscles
at a place called a rehabilitation centre.
It was a really important step in his recovery and so Bevan's decided to raise some money
to build a brand new centre for others who have spinal injuries to use as well.
To raise the money for the new centre Bevan's decided to travel around Australia on a
wheelchair scooter.
He started in Queensland at the end of April and Bevan's planning to end up in South
Australia soon.
The scooter that he's been travelling around Australia in has been specially made into a trike
so that it has three wheels.
And it's also got a ramp on the back that Bevan uses to wheel his wheelchair up onto the
scooter when he's ready to get going.
Bevan's hoping that by doing the 66 day trip around Australia in the specially fitted out
scooter that he'll be able to raise $1 million to build the brand new rehabilitation centre and
help people just like him who have a hurt spine.
So from everybody here at Morning Kids Bevan we wish you all the very best and we hope
that you raise that $1 million.
And we look forward to hearing more about it.
Let's have some fun.
Did somebody say fun? Yes.
Yes, it's time for us to have some fun.
And to find out just how closely you've been listening today.
Are you ready? Are you steady? Let's go.
Question number one, what is the long, thin pasta cold, the really tasty stuff that we most
often have with bolognese sauce? Oh yes, feeling a little hungry now for some.
Spaghetti yummy yum.
And question number two today is which country is Bevan travelling around in his special
wheelchair scooter? Yes, Australia, that's correct and it's going to take him 66 days.
How did you go today? Did you get one question right or did you get both of them? Well
done.
Time to say goodbye.
Well it's the end of a show for another day but I'll have lots more fun facts for you again in
tomorrow's show when we're going to be learning about the largest member of the cat family.
Until then friends I hope that you have a fun and joyful day remembering to be silly and to
be honest and be kind.
Let's catch up again right back here tomorrow for Wild Wednesday.
