Installing bottom half of crankcase

Applying sealant to sealing face of bottom half of crankcase

ATTENTION
Interruption of main oil supply due to closure of restrictor or oil
duct
Transmission damage
Work with meticulous care when running a bead of sealant round
the sealing face.

Clean the sealing faces.


Apply sealant to the faces of the bottom half of the crankcase as
illustrated.
Run the bead of sealant at the outside edge in zone (1), because
restrictor (2) and oil gallery (3) are located in the corresponding part
of the top half of the crankcase.

Before lowering the crankcase half into position, make sure that
selector star (1) is in the neutral position (arrow).
Retaining pin (2) must be installed.

Position the gear wheels as shown in the illustration.


Set the gearbox to the neutral position and make sure that the
individual gearwheels are free to rotate.

Check the positions of crankshaft bearing shells (1).

Lubricate the bearing shells with engine oil.

When seating the crankcase half, note the reamed pins (arrows).

Check that the gearbox bearing is correctly positioned:


The pin (arrow) must be located in the notch in the crankcase half.
Turn the bearing locating ring until the gap (arrow) is at the top.

Pivot the balancing conrod up and lower bottom crankcase half (1)
onto the top crankcase half.
Install the screws and tighten until hand-tight; the screws are of
different lengths and must be installed in the correct positions.

Securing balancing swing arm

Pivot balancing swing arm (3) down.

Screw pull rod (No. 00 8 581) into bearing stud (2).


Press in the bearing studs until seated.
Install retaining pin (1).

Turn the engine right way up, install the screws and tighten until
hand-tight; note that the screws are of different lengths and must be
installed in the correct positions.

Tightening sequence for bottom half of crankcase

Turn the engine until the bottom half of the crankcase is uppermost.
Tightening sequence for fasteners of bottom half of crankcase, see
(1) to (4); use an electronic torque wrench/ angle-of-rotation
tightening tool to tighten the fasteners.

Turn the engine complete with the bottom half of the crankcase right
way up.
