11 31 539 Replacing all camshafts (cylinder-head cover removed)

Preparatory work
Locking engine at firing TDC
Removing chain tensioner
Removing camshaft bearing cap unit

Core activity
(-) Removing both camshafts

Using suitable tools, lift first inlet camshaft (2) then exhaust
camshaft (1), taking care not to damage the sealing face.
Disengage timing chain (3) from the sprocket of the inlet camshaft
first, then from the sprocket of the exhaust camshaft, and secure it
at a suitable point so that it cannot fall out of position.
Remove inlet camshaft (2).
Remove exhaust camshaft (1).

Removing all oil sinks

ATTENTION
Hemispherical oil sinks dropped in and blocking oil ducts in the
cylinder head
Engine damage
Use closes to seal off the oil ducts.

Flip up follower (1) and oil sink with magnet (No. 11 1 846).
Remove oil sinks (2) and place them, correctly sorted, in tray (No.
11 1 844).

(-) Replacing camshafts

Removing camshaft sprockets

Remove screw (1), while counter-holding the hexagon of camshaft

(3).
Remove sprocket (2).

Installing camshaft sprockets

Clean the threads.

Position sprocket (2) on camshaft (3), making sure that the sprocket
pin (arrow) is located in the bore (arrow).
Install screw (1).

Tightening torques
Sprocket to camshaft
M18 x 1.5 50 Nm
Thread-locking compound
(Loctite 243, Medium strength)

Removing coolant-pump drive gear (camshaft)

Remove screw (1) (left-hand thread), while counter-holding the

hexagon (arrow).
Remove drive gear (2).

Installing coolant-pump drive gear (camshaft)

Clean the contact surface and place drive gear (2) in position.
Install screw (1) (left-hand thread), while counter-holding the
hexagon (arrow).

Tightening torques
Coolant-pump drive gear to camshaft
M8 x 25 - 10.9, left-hand thread 30 Nm

(-) Installing both camshafts

Install all oil sinks

ATTENTION
Hemispherical oil sinks dropped in and blocking oil ducts in the
cylinder head
Engine damage
Use closes to seal off the oil ducts.

If valve clearance was measured on disassembly, use suitable oil

sinks as per the measurements sheet to correct valve clearance.

Take each oil sink (2) in turn out of tray (No. 11 1 844), lightly
lubricate each oil sink with engine oil and install it in its correct
position between cam follower (1) and valve.
NOTICE
Use only oil sinks that bear an "X" as an identification mark.
Scrap all unmarked heat sinks.

Finally, check that all oil sinks are correctly seated.

Installing exhaust camshaft

Make sure that the crankshaft is locked at firing TDC, cylinder No. 1.

Lubricate all bearing faces with engine oil.

Engage exhaust camshaft (1) in timing chain (2), pulling timing chain
(2) taut on the exhaust side.
Place exhaust camshaft (1) in position, noting the position of the
mark:
EX mark flush with the sealing face (arrow)
EX mark toward the inside

Installing inlet camshaft

Make sure that the crankshaft is locked at firing TDC; cams of the
right cylinder are at overlap (arrows).
Lubricate all bearing faces with engine oil.
ATTENTION
Gears of coolant pump and camshaft incorrectly positioned
Component damage
Make sure that the gears of the coolant pump and the camshaft are
not against each other when the threaded fasteners of the bearing
cap are being tightened down.

Turn exhaust camshaft (1) toward the inlet side and light it at a slight
angle.
Insert inlet camshaft (2), noting the EX mark.
The IN mark is flush with the sealing face
Place inlet camshaft (2) to a slight angle and steer chain (3) .
Insert chain tensioner and operate by hand to tension the timing
chain.
Check the marks on the camshaft sprockets.
The IN and EX marks are facing each other and are flush with the
sealing face

Follow-up work
Securing camshaft bearing cap unit
Installing camshaft bearing cap unit
Install the chain tensioner
Checking engine timing
Releasing TDC locator
Checking engine timing
Checking valve clearance
Installing screw (in hole for TDC locating screw)
