Example
School leaver CV (CV with no job experience)

Joseph has finished his studies and is now thinking of

writing his very first school leaver CV. He has the

grades, but no work experience.

A cover letter is a (typically) one-page document
that explains to the hiring manager why you are
an ideal candidate for the job.

It goes beyond your resume to explain in detail

how you could add value to the company.
It can be very helpful to look at cover letter samples

when writing your own.

A sample can help you decide what to include in

your letter, and how to format the letter.

Writing Tips
 Think of your cover letter as a golden opportunity

to market yourself, your skills, your qualifications, and

your training to an employer.

The structure
At the top of your letter
- Your contact information

- Date

- Contact information of the person , the

institution or the company
Greeting
- Always use a formal greeting.

Dear Mr. , Ms., Miss or Mrs. and the

last name.
e.g., Dear Mr. Chua,

You can use “Dear Hiring Manager,“ in case you can’t find the
name.
The body of the letter
(max. 3 paragraphs)
The first paragraph lets the employer know

-why you are writing,

-which position you are applying for and

-how you heard about the position.

It should be kept short and sweet; no more than two

or three sentences.
The second paragraph is usually the longest paragraph

of your cover letter. Here you highlight two or three of

your most relevant qualifications and support your

claim with specific examples.

The final paragraph should be no longer than four
sentences and is used to refer the employer to your
resume (CV), request an interview and inform the
employer of your plan to follow up on this
application, e.g., “I will call next week to follow up
on the status of my application.”
You should also thank them politely for their time
Closing the letter
Use a business-like closing, such as “Sincerely,”

“Best Regards,” or “Yours Truly,” followed by your

name and signature (on a hard copy).

Sign your name in black ink after your closing.

Type your name.
