FOREWORD

In daily living, humans require electricity. Electricity is a fundamental

requirement for human comfort in all spheres of life, including the simplest home,
extensive residences, complex offices, and even the most advanced structures.

This project is a proposed electrical distribution design. It was prepared by the

engineering students who’s taking the subject Distribution System and Substation
Design. It contains information pertaining to a complete electrical distribution plan to
a given location. It contains the information of designing on how to supply electricity
in the given proposed location up to the billing of the materials. The contents of this
project are designing a distribution line to primary distribution to secondary
distribution, the computations on how many poles, ACSR wire, conductor,
transformer, protection used, bolts, grounding material, are needed and what type of
materials are being used in the design. It also contains the staking sheet of distribution
line, the BOM or bills of materials.

PROBLEM 1: SINGLE – PHASE LINE INTENDED FOR THE POWER
REQUIREMENT OF A CERTAIN FACILITY

A certain facility, as shown in the map, needs single phase primary

supply. It has the following load:
4 - 2.5 hp ACU
2 - 2.5 hp Water Pump
1.5 kW Lighting Load
3 - 6 hp 1Ø Motor
3 kW Appliance Load

Design a single phase line that will supply the requirement of the facility. Provide
computation for the transformer rating, size of conductor, overcurrent and surge
protection. Prepare also bill of materials.

6
4−2.5 Hp ACU =( 2.5 ×746 ) × 4=7,460 W
2−2.5hp Water Pump=( 2.5 ×746 ) × 2=3,730 W
1.5 kW Lighting Load=1,500 W
3−6 hp 1 Ø Motor=( 6 ×746 ) × 3=13,428 W

3 kW Appliance Load=3,000W

Total Connected Loads

7,460 W +3,730 W +1,500 W +13,428 W +3,000 W =29,118 W

TRANSFORMER RATING AND CONDUCTOR SIZING

@10% future load

29,118 W ×1.10=32,029.8W

@80% power factor

32,029.8 W ÷ 0.8=40,037.25VA

Transformer rating:

40.04 kVA, use 50 kVA transformer

TRANSFORMER RATING AND CONDUCTOR SIZING

Provide 1-25 kVA Single Phase Transformer

40,037.25VA
Primary Current = =1.75 A
(1.732 x 13 , 200)

40,037.25 VA
Secondary Current =174 .7 A
230

For Primary: Use 1-ACSR (Swan)

For Secondary: Use 100 mm THHN and 50 mm2 wire

PROBLEM 2: SINGLE – PHASE DISTRIBUTION LINE WITH
UNDERBUILT AND OPEN SECONDARY

As shown in the map is a housing project. The demand of each household is

shown in the table below.

Demand

1 0.75 kW

2 1.5 kW

3 2.5 kW

Design a single phase distribution line that will supply the project. Compute
the size of transformers and conductors using diversity factor. Determine the size of
current protection of each transformer and at the tapping point. Provide also voltage
drop computation for the secondary line. And lastly, prepare bill of materials for the
created design.

PROBLEM 3: VEE – PHASE DISTRIBUTION LINE WITH UNDERBUILT
AND OPEN SECONDARY

27
As shown in the map is a housing project. The demand of each household is
shown in the table below.

Demand

1 0.75 kW

2 1.5 kW

3 2.5 kW

Design a vee - phase distribution line that will supply the project. Compute the
size of transformers and conductors using diversity factor. Determine the size of
current protection of each transformer and at the tapping point. Provide also
voltage drop computation for the secondary line. And lastly, prepare bill of materials
for the created design.

note: The facility will utilize underground secondary lines

Bldg A and Bldg B have common feeder.

Bldg C, Water Supply, Bldg D, and Bldg E have also common feeder.

Design a distribution line that will supply the site. Provide computation for the
rating of the equipment, size of primary conductor, and overcurrent protection on the
primary side. Determine the size of the conductor and conduct voltage drop
calculation in the secondary lines. Determine also the size of the main circuit breaker
and the protection of the two secondary lines. Prepare bill of materials.

47
Total Load:

Building A:

(89,520W + 7,000W + 16,412W + 12000W + 134,280W + 33,570W) = 292.782 kW

Building B:

(18,650W + 3,000W + 6,000W + 8,952W) = 36.602kW

Building C:

(29,840W + 14,920W + 3,000W + 9,000W + 8,952W) = 65.712Kw

Building D:

(7,460W + 3,000W + 6,000W + 8,952W) = 25.412 kW

Building E:

(59,680W + 3,000W + 9,000W + 8,952W + 67,140W) = 147.772 kW

Water Supply:

(27 x 746) = 20.142kW

Power Facility:

(3,730W + 6,000W + 2000) = 11.73kW

TRANSFORMER RATING AND CONDUCTOR SIZING

Total load = 600.152 kW

Assume 85% power factor;
600.152 / 0.85 = 706.061 kVA
Provide 10% expansion;
706.061 x 1.1 = 776.667 kVA
776.667 / 3 = 258.889 kVA

48
Provide 3-333 kVA single phase transformer

Primary Current = (Transformer VA Rating) / (Primary Voltage)

= 333,000 / (1.732 x 13,200)
Primary Conductor = Primary Current x 125%
= 14.56 A
Use code Turkey ACSR
Secondary Current = (Transformer VA Rating) / (Secondary Voltage)
= 333,000 / (1.732 x 220)
= 873.90 A
Secondary Conductor = (Secondary Current) x (Percentage from Table
4.50.1.3(B))
= (873.90) (125%)
= 1092.37 A
Use

49
OVERCURRENT PROTECTION

Primary Protection = (Primary Current) x (Percentage from Table

4.50.1.3(B))
= (14.56 A) (250%)
= 36.4 A
Use 40 AT 3P MCCB
Secondary Protection
For Feeder 1 = (Secondary Current) x (Percentage from Table
4.50.1.3(B))
= (873.90) (125%)
= 1092.375 A
Use 1200 AT 3P MCCB
