Convergence Study
Jousef Murad
Create a Mesh
Use a 1st order coarse mesh as a starting point

● Tetrahedral automatic mesh

● Verify your simulation setup

● Fast and easy to generate

Mesh Convergence Study - 3-Step Process
● Do a convergence study to obtain mesh-independent results

1. Create a mesh using the fewest (reasonable) number of elements and analyse the stress at a
chosen point (same point!)

2. Recreate the mesh and make it denser, re-analyse it, and compare results to those of the
previous mesh

3. Keep increasing the mesh density and re-analyse that as well until you can see a convergence

1st or 2nd Order?
● Choosing a 1st-order mesh or 2nd-order mesh is problem
dependent

● For contact problems , 1st-order elements perform better than

2nd-order

● For bending problems, 2nd-order elements

perform better than 1st-order
