Procedure for preflight inspection


R44 Helicopter

You should refer to the latest Robinson R22 Pilot Operating Handbook (POH) and your
instructor for more information on how to conduct a preflight inspection of the helicopter.

The intent of this web page is to help you understand what you should be checking as you
read the POH checklist.

When the two differ, you should give preference to the official Robinson checklist.

1. PRE-FLIGHT INSPECTION

TopCat Helicopters operates the Robinson 44 in “performance 3” for VFR flights, under the
responsibility of one pilot commander.
For each utilisation of the helicopter, only the verifications taken from the reference of the
constructor are applicable.

1. Pre-flight checks
2. Pre-departure checks
3. Take-off and climb
4. Cruise and descent
5. Approach and Landing
6. Engine shutdown
7. After exiting helicopter

2. PREFLIGHT INSPECTION

This check is performed to ensure that the helicopter is airworthy and that the defects are deferred or
repaired. This check is performed by a technician of the maintenance department. If this is not
possible, the commander may perform those checks if he has been trained for this.
It has to be done before the first flight of the day.
The validity is 72 hours.
It’s the responsibility of the commander to ensure that the preflight inspection PF-TCH-R44-check A is
done

3. BEFORE PRE-FLIGHT CHECK

 Ensure that the helicopter has been serviced as required, check “Operation and Maintenance
Report”

 Remove any temporary covers and, in cold weather, remove even small accumulations of
frost, ice, or snow.

 A 2,4 m step ladder is recommended for preflight inspection of the main rotor; however, the
main rotor hub may be reached by first opening the right rear seat and stepping on the seat
support and then stepping on the deck below the aux fuel tank.

 During the PF-TCH-R44-check A inspection, check the general condition of the aircraft and
also look for any evidence of leakage, discoloration due to heat, dents, chafing, galling, nicks,
corrosion, and especially for cracks. Also check for fretting at seams where parts are joined
together. Fretting of aluminum parts produces a fine black powder while steel produces a
reddish brown or black residue.

 Check Telatemps for temperature increases during prior flight.

4. TURN AROUND PREFLIGHT CHECK BEFORE EACH FLIGHT

This check is performed by the pilot.

It has to be done before each flight.

The Turn around check is not intended to be a detailed mechanical inspection, but to ensure the pilot
of the condition of the helicopter, the airworthiness, the fuel and oil levels and the particularities of
the mission.

The pilot will sign the “Operations and Maintenance Report” under item Captain’s signature meaning
that the pre-departure inspection has been carried out, the fuel and oil are sufficient for the intended
flight, the deferred defects have been reviewed and accepted and that the helicopter loading is
conform to the sheet, load plan, methods and operations manual instructions.
The turnaround check consists in:

1. Checking fluid levels.


2. A rapid check of the main and tail rotor blade skins.
3. Checking that all loads are securely tied down, doors and cowlings are correctly locked.
4. Warning light test.
5. The V-belt slack.
6. General conditions of the helicopter.

CAUTION: Fill baggage compartments under unoccupied seats to capacity before using
baggage compartments under occupied seats. Avoid placing objects in compartment which
could injure occupant if seat collapses during a hard landing.

CAUTION: Ensure that all doors are unlocked before flight to allow rescue or exit in an
emergency.

CAUTION: Shorter pilots may require a cushion (stored under seat) to obtain full travel of
all controls.
