INCOME GENERATING PROJECT: PERA SA BASURA

II. PROPONENT: YASMEEN C. TRINIDAD

III. BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE

On a daily basis, solid waste generation in schools and households are alarmingly

high. These wastes range from cardboard, papers to plastic bottles. Without effective

supervision and disposal methods, most of these discarded materials will be collected

and headed to the landfills, or worse, flushed at the roadside clogging drains and

rivers. Recognizing solid waste management as a major environmental problem, the

government signed into law the Republic Act (R.A.) 9003 which is also known as

Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. This law mandates strategic

approach to systematically manage solid waste to ensure public health protection and

environment. Categorically, schools are instructed that solid waste management

principles, like waste reduction, recovery, segregation, and recycling, be included in

the academic curricula to improve learners’ environmental awareness.

To successfully promote solid waste management participation in schools, it is

crucial to help learners understand the waste problem and its consequences on human

and environmental health, and how they can contribute in solving the problem. By

simply raising awareness, they can have active roles in addressing this pressing

environmental issue.

Meanwhile, we can incentivize the participation of the younger generation on our

solid waste management programs by demonstrating the profit potential of recyclable

materials. In this Pera sa Basura project, learners will be motivated to collect and

segregate recyclable materials from their respective households and classrooms, and

pool them in school where the accumulated waste will be weighed and sold. This will

show that wastes can be converted into a valuable resource.

IV. OBJECTIVES

The income generating project aims to:

a. promote proper segregation, collection and disposal of solid waste;

b. inculcate learners’ positive attitudes and practices towards environmental

protection and public health; and,

c. engage learners in practical ways to reduce and manage their wastes at

home and in school;

V. TARGET GROUP

The target group of the Pera sa Basura project are the student body of Macalong

Elementary School. With their cooperative effort to segregate and collect recyclable

solid waste materials, they will also benefit from the profit through the school feeding

program.
