Course Syllabus
This document sets out details for the ISA Go! Windsurfing Instructor training course
including the role instructors are expected to be able to undertake, the skills and knowledge
these Instructors need and how the training programmes are run.

Go! Windsurfing Instructor

Role
To lead sessions on training courses up to and including Go 4 It! within the ISA’s Go! Windsurfing Scheme
within any ISA Training Centre.

Format for training courses


Candidates with no ISA Instructor qualifications attend a training course with minimum duration of 6 days (48
hours).
Candidates who already hold an ISA Instructor qualification attend a training course with minimum duration of 3
days (24 hours).
Full details on the requirements and format for setting up and running this course are included in the ISA
Guidelines for setting up and running an Instructor Training Course.

Entry Requirements
Prior to entry onto the training course all participants must;
 Hold a valid Emergency Care Certificate from approved course.
 ISA National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2);
o With certificate endorsed for both tiller & console controls.
o With 20 hours power-boating logged following certification.
Participants on the 3 day course must also;
 Hold a valid ISA Instructor qualification.
Participants on the 2 day course must also;
 Hold a valid ISA Sailing Instructor qualification.

Age Requirements
Participants on the training course must be 18 years old (Participants who enter the course aged 17 can act as
assistant windsurfing instructors).

Methodology
The course is run using a mixture of shore-based and on the water sessions during which participants will be
introduced to and then have the opportunity to develop and practice practical instructing skills. Participants will
be encouraged through a process of directed discovery, to identify and develop models for the delivery of skill
based and knowledge based sessions and apply these to a variety of scenarios.

Instructor Trainers
This training course is run by an Instructor Trainer listed by the ISA as approved to run the Go! Windsurfing
Instructor training course.
The 6 day course is moderated by an Instructor Trainer approved by the ISA. Full details on the role of the
Moderating Trainer are included in ISA Guidelines for setting up and running an Instructor Training Course.

Facilities & Equipment


The course must be run in an ISA Training Centre accredited to run courses within the ISA Go! Windsurfing
Scheme up to and including Go 4 it!. Full details on the facilities and equipment required are included in ISA
Guidelines for setting up and running an Instructor Training Course. However, as a minimum the Training
Centre must have sufficient equipment to accommodate the total number of participants minus two.

Assessment
Assessment on the course is continuous.
The Instructor Trainer will provide participants with ongoing feedback during the course. On the 6 day course
here will be a formal one to one feedback sessions on day 3.
Participants will be informed of the results of the course at the end of the course and before they leave. The
three possible results are:
Pass You have satisfactorily completed all training and pre-requisite requirements and will have an
Instructor certificate issued by the ISA.
Defer There is a need further development or action prior to your instructor qualification being
awarded. An individual action plan will be created with the Trainer during the final individual
debriefing session. This will detail the requirements and progression path specific to your
needs.
Fail Significant development is required and full attendance on anther instructor training
course is required in order to obtain the qualification.

Certification
Upon successful completion of the training course, and submission of appropriate information to the ISA by the
Instructor trainer running the course, the participant will receive;
 ISA Go! Windsurfing Instructor Certificate.
 Coaching Ireland Intermediate Instructor Certificate.
The certificate is valid for 3 years and while the holder has a current Emergency Care certificate.

Revalidation
The certificate may be revalidated by either;
 Sending to the ISA evidence of;
o Attendance at an ISA Instructor Conference
o Log of the following teaching hours. An average of more than 10 days per year since your
certificate was issued. And at least 20 days in the last 2 years.
o Current ISA membership and Emergency Care Certificate.
 Up grading your qualification to a higher level within the Go! Windsurfing Instructor ladder.
 Sending to the ISA evidence of ;
o Having completed a one day assesment run by an ISA Instructor Trainer listed by the ISA as
approved to run the Go! Windsurfing Instructor training course.
o Current ISA membership and Emergency Care Certificate.
