CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Working students are those students who are working or having a part-time job
studying (Advantages and Responsibilities of a Working Student | Bartleby, n.d.). They are
ordinary people who do not have professional or very highly paid jobs. Some of them
spend their time working in libraries, cafeterias, faculty rooms, and some school offices.
Some students also are working in their relatives, teachers, in his/her employer. They
work at a range of 15-20 hours per week while stabilizing there time in accommodating
also for their academic studies.

The duties and responsibilities of working students have various positive and
negative effects. (What Are the Importance of Academic Performance | ipl.org, n.d.) Many working
students are able to pay their own bills, buy some things that they needed, and provide
extra money for their families. However, despite of benefits the students can gain from
working, it is undeniable that other studies are being affected. Many working students
come to school late because of the demand of the work. Less time to study and they
always late in submitting project, activity and reports.

Given the observed circumstances, the researchers conducted this study to


determine the impact of being a working students and their academic performance in
Tawagan Sur National High School.

Statement of the Problem

This study generally aims to determine the impact of being a working students in
their academic performance in Tawagan Sur National High School, Tawagan Sur
Pagadian City during 1st Semester of School Year 2022-2023.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the working students in terms of:

 Sex
 Grade level
 Strand

2. What are the different jobs of the working students in Tawagan Sur National
High School?
3. What are the possible impact of being a working students in their academic
performance?

Significance of the Study

This study will contribute research-based information about the working students
in Tawagan Sur National High School.

With the help of this study, students will be able grasp how poverty hinder one’s
ability to educate oneself.

This study can also give benefits to the following:

 Administrator- so that they can understand more what is the reason why the
working student are always late.
 Future Researchers- for they can ideas to their research, for further study.
 Teachers- so that they understand what is the situation of working students as it
could be the basis in giving the chances/considerations in submitting
requirements.

Scope and Limitation


This research study is a qualitative research specifically narrative report
with the purpose of determining the impact of being a working students in their
academic performance in Tawagan Sur National High School, Tawagan Sur
Pagadian City, during the 1st Semester of School Year 2022-2023.

Additionally, this study will be limited to students who are employed and
compensation while attending school. This study will not attempt consider other
variable in other environment.
CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter includes books, articles, finished thesis, methodologies and


conclusions that provides explanations and logical connections which helps in
familiarizing information that are relevant and similar to the present study.

According to the College Board (2016), taking a job is not a matter of choice
anymore, but necessity. Students who are working need to work commonly because
they cannot afford to go to college or even to support their own family income. Some
also supplement their college scholarships and even work to enhance their confidence
and especially to improve their time-management skills.

When according to Balla (n.d.), non-working students are those students who are
capable of studying without spending time working. These theory explains the empirical
findings that will examine the relationship of the non-working and working students to
determine the possible outcomes in their academic performance.

Summary

One common advantage of a working students is that they will earn money. With
this they can relieve their parent’s burden and can support their own life. (Advantages
and Responsibilities of a Working Student | Bartleby, n.d.-b), studies prove that working
students are more confident and can mount better time management that the students
who are not employed because a simple part-time job can provide both training and
experience. It can also polish their organization and multi-tasking skills. In agreement
with Boshoven (2016), the admission representatives in jobs after college want to find
candidates who initiate maturity, responsibility, independence and the other said
features. The reason basically is because good workers certainly demonstrate those
important character traits, and employer can write excellent recommendation letter for
the following student who have outstanding.

Conclusion

Given the different articles about the working students and their academic performance,
the researcher can conclude that these can be use as the basis of the study.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This study aims to determine the impact of being a working students in their
academic performance. And it is illustrated in the diagram below.

Figure 1 Shows that being working students can give impact to the academic
performance of students in Tawagan Sur National High School. The arrow shows the
impact of being a working students.

Definition of Terms

 Working students – In this study it refers to the students who are employed and
receive compensation while attending to school.
 Academic Performance – in this study it refers to the performance of a working
students in academics and their participation during the 1 st semester of School
Year 2022-2023.
 Compensation – In this study it refers to the money received by an working
students from an employer (relatives, teacher) as a salary or wages.
