TEST CONDITIONS AFTER OPENING COOLER LINES
For example: when replacing the transmission, changing ATF, changing ATF lines, replacing ATF cooler,
replacing ATF thermostat.
Warm up transmission in lower load range. Switch all transmission ranges several times while
doing so.
Read out the ATF sump temperature using the PIWIS Tester.
Press the brake pedal and shift the gear lever slowly through P-R-N-D three times. Hold the
selector lever in each position for 2 seconds.
Test and filling procedure at idle speed with air conditioning switched off.
1. Raise the vehicle to a horizontal position and secure it to prevent it from rolling away. →

4. Screw adapter for filling oil Adapter For Filling ATF Oil VAS 6262/2 WE 1390 into the ATF
pan hand-tight.
5. Connect adapter for filling oil Adapter For Filling Oil VAS 6262A WE 1389 to the rapid-action
coupling and fill in ATF.
6. Pull off adapter for filling oil Adapter For Filling Oil VAS 6262A WE 1389 at the rapid-action
coupling and check to see if ATF emerges.
7. If no ATF emerges, fill in ATF until a constant discharge is visible at the lifting tube -2- .
8. Allow the ATF to drain for as long as required until the ATF is still only dripping continuously.
9. Screw in oil inspection plug -1- with a new seal. → Tightening Torque: 16 Nm (12 ft. lb.) +/-1

be replaced before installation .

8. To drain the front ATF lines, remove the ATF thermostat. → 387519 REMOVING AND
INSTALLING ATF THERMOSTAT
9. As soon as the ATF has drained from the ATF lines, install the ATF thermostat. → 387519
REMOVING AND INSTALLING ATF THERMOSTAT
10. Screw the overflow pipe -2- into the ATF pan. → Tightening Torque: 1 Nm (0.5 ft. lb.)

11. Screw adapter for filling ATF oil Adapter For Filling ATF Oil VAS 6262/2 WE 1390 into the
ATF pan hand-tight.

1. Only part of the total change quantity can be filled because of the test specifications
stipulated for the ATF .
2. The rest must then be filled as described in the Checking ATF section .
12. Connect adapter for filling oil Adapter For Filling Oil VAS 6262A WE 1389 to the rapid-action
coupling and fill in ATF.
13. Pull off adapter for filling oil Adapter For Filling Oil VAS 6262A WE 1389 at the rapid-action
coupling and check to see if ATF emerges.
If no ATF emerges, fill in ATF until a constant discharge is visible at the lifting tube.

15. Check and top up ATF. → 370235 CHECKING AND TOPPING UP ATF

The release button must not be pressed while removing and installing the selector knob.

1. Turn locking mechanism at the bottom of the selector knob -A- by 45 degrees in direction of
arrow and pull selector knob up and off -B- . The release button will pop out.

2. The selector knob must be secured following removal by inserting the transport lock 9839 so
that the release button cannot be pressed in.

2. Transport lock 9839 must be inserted into the selector knob vertically with respect to the
button until it locks into position.

4. Transport lock 9839 must be removed immediately from the selector knob so that the release
button pops out.

1. If a new selector knob is installed, the red transport lock must be removed beforehand.

5. Pull the selector support as far as possible out of the center console.
6. Remove the clamp -1- on the selector lever cable connection -A- .

more than one turn.
1. Otherwise, the screw will fall into the selector support and the selector support
will have to be replaced.

7. Loosen the fastening screw in opening -3- next to the emergency release -4- for connecting
the selector lever cable -2- and selector support -1- by 180° using a 5-mm Allen key,
approx. 15 cm long .

Check that the rubber sleeve for the selector lever cable is seated correctly to prevent noises and stop
water from leaking in. Spray the rubber sleeve with soapy water to make fitting easier.
1. Insert rubber sleeve -2- for the selector lever cable -1- into the center tunnel -A- .

remove heat shield.

3. Remove converter screws -arrow- through the opening in the starter using 3/8" - 5/16" bit
connecting piece and Torx T55 bit screwdriver insert Nr. 42-1 .

4. Turn the crankshaft further for the next converter screw using a socket-wrench insert 9714 .

5. Remove safety clip -A- on the selector lever cable and use universal removal tool Nr. 21 to
lever the cable off the ball joint -arrow- .

6. Unscrew fastening screws for coolant pipes on the converter bell housing.

1. The line connections on the transmission and the ends of the ATF lines should be closed
off after the lines have been separated from the transmission!
7. Disconnect ATF lines from the transmission. To do this, unscrew screw -arrow- and remove
lines.

8. Remove fastening screw for ATF line holder on the converter bell housing.

The sealing rings at the ends of the ATF lines on the transmission and cooler sides must be
replaced before installation .

4. Lift the transmission using the workshop crane and move it into the installation position with
respect to the engine.
6. The dowel sleeves on the engine must slip perfectly into the bores on the transmission bell
housing.
7. Fit the transmission screws with the holders for the primary catalytic converters. →

9. Fit fastening screws -1, 2- for the rear cross member -3- to → Initial Tightening: 50 Nm (37
ft. lb.) on the transmission -4- and tighten to → Final Tightening: 90° .

12. Place screw on special tool Bit Insert 9688 and screw in screw.

13. Position bit snap-on head and special tool Insert 9687 and screw in screw, but do not tighten.
14. Turn crankshaft clockwise with special tool Socket Wrench Insert 9714 .
15. Insert special tool Locating Pins 9595 into the front bore on the converter bell housing
-arrow- and hold in place with light pressure until it engages when the crankshaft is turned.
This sets the position for the next screw.

16. Complete the steps described above for the other five screws.
17. Remove special tool Fixing Pins 9595 before tightening the converter screws to the specified
torque. → Tightening Torque: 85 Nm (63 ft. lb.)
18. Insert plug for converter assembly opening. To do this, moisten the groove on the plug with
water.

19. Starting at the cut-out in the engine block -1- , press in the plug all the way round from position
-2-3- .
