Pg. 151-152 Review A

1. At the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama, Tonya saw the
Civil Rights Memorial, she sent a postcard to Alice after.
2. To create a special memorial, Morris S. Dees, a cofounder of the Law Center, and
other center officials wanted to find top architect. This led them to Maya Lin.
3. My mother remembers reading about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in
Washington, D.C. when Lin was chosen to design it.
4. Lin researched the history of the civil rights movement before she made up her
mind that convinced her to accept the project.
5. This makes a simple but striking effect the granite memorial consists of two
distinct parts: a wall with an engraved quotation and a round, engraved tabletop,
as you can see here,
6. On the granite tabletop, whoever thought of engraving the events and names
associated with the civil rights movement, had an inspired idea.
7. Water flows down the wall, which adds a sense of calm and continuity, and over
the tabletop of the memorial.
8. Mrs. Bledsoe told about some of the forty entries on the table she had just read to
Tamisha.
9. Nowadays, many people come to Montgomery, which, of course, benefits the
city, especially to see the Civil Rights Memorial.
