Barbie dolls have been both praised for celebrating diversity among women and criticized for commercializing feminism. While Barbie may influence children, adults should not imitate her but rather see her as opening possibilities for who they can become. As a brand, Barbie also shows different roles and careers in its advertising, though critics argue she long promoted a singular, patriarchal view of ideal womanhood.

Who would have thought that a plastic doll would be so
controversial? And yet, Barbie’s large-scale franchise has recently been both commended for its celebration of the differences between women and criticised for cashing in on the feminist movement.
I personally believe that Barbie will have an influence on a child,
not on an adult. Many people believe that if they bought their children a Barbie doll, their children would want to become like Barbie, that is, to have a perfect life without a single mistake.
A role model shouldn’t be someone we imitate; instead they
should be someone who opens up possibilities and choices of who we can be; someone whose qualities and characteristics should serve as the underpinning of our future selves.
Barbie, as a brand, also does this in their adverts. Barbie is a
fashion doll manufactured by American toy company Mattel and launched on March 9, 1959. Barbie has long been used as a model for the ideal female lifestyle, promoting a cookie-cutter role of women - dictated by a patriarch - to young girls.
