What are the characteristic of trematode?

Trematodes are characterized by being worms with a non-segmented body, flattened dorsoventrally.
Generally, their body is leaf- shaped and they have two suckers at the ends of their body.

Trematodes are flatworms with female and male reproductive organs in the same individual, and with
an incomplete digestive tract. Trematodes significant for dogs belong to the Digenean subclass with a
mollusk intermediate host mandatory in the life cycle. Some species require a second intermediate host
fish, for example Digenean trematodes are not two specific in their definitive host demands and may
carnivores suitable. That is why many human pathogen flukes are effective to dogs too. In this chapter,
only selected species are introduced. The adult worms, flukes, live in the bile ducks or liver tissue (liver
flukes), alimentary tract, or vascular or respiratory system of the dog and clause clinical signs according
to the site and the intensity of the infection. Liver flukes are even known to cause cancer, probably due
to constant mechanical stimulus.
