How do they work

There are three main components

Tower Phone Sim Card

The Tower Transmits and receives from your phone.
It knows it is you because your SIM card is unique with your phone number and
supplier.
When you get a new phone and STAY with the SAME supplier just SWAP the SIM CARD
If you change suppliers, they will issue you a new SIM card but
YOUR NUMBER STAYS THE SAME
( You can ask for a new number if need be)
Mobile Plan Basics

1. There is the owner of the Network

a. Telstra
b. Optus
c. Vodafone which is now TPG Telcom Limited

2. Then there are the retailers

a. Aldi, Amaysim, Woolworths, Telstra, Optus,
TPG, Kogan etc etc

3. The Components of a plan usually are:

a. Phone included?
b. Network used - Telstra, Optus or TPG
c. Price per month
d. Calls to land lines
e. Calls to Mobile numbers
g. Overseas Calls
h. Monthly data allowance
i. Cost if monthly data allowance is exceeded
k. Texting limitations
Before trying to move to another supplier :
. If you bought the phone through a plan, then make sure that it is all paid off
as per the contract
. One needs to check if your phone is locked
It is very rare but does occur if you have purchased your phone through an
odd plan.
Iphone: Settings/General/About and the info is at the bottom under IED.
Android: Not that easy. Recommended way is to borrow a SIM that uses
another network and see if it works

Choosing a Telco (Telstra, Optus, TPG)

. Find one with the coverage that suits your requirements
. It is pointless having to stand on a chair in the middle of the living room to
make a call
. Unless you have a lock in contract, it is very easy to change and you keep your
number
. The retailers all state the network they use ( personally I use one that uses
Telstra and my wife uses one that uses Optus). Coverage does vary.
A nice no nonsense description of the plans
However after scrolling to the bottom one finds this:
In summary:
You can talk to the cows come home but if you use too much data it is going
to cost big time

So what uses your data allocation?

E-mails with large attachments

UTube
Watching TV
Video calls
Tik-Tok
Hot spotting ( using your phone to allow a laptop to access the NET)

Pretty well everything that is not Voice or Text.

So what is the answer?

If you want to sit on a bus watching your favourite TV show,

buy a plan with a lot of data.

For others (including me) the answer is WI-FI

Most if not all heavy data using Apps on mobile phones

will first check that it is connected to Wi-FI and use
that.
WI-FI uses the NBN to transmit data.
With the NBN, each user has a unique NETWORK
NAME and PASSWORD. (Usually comes with a fridge
magnet)

On an IPhone go to Settings/WI-FI , enable WI-FI and

the choose your own network and enter the password.
It is similar on an Android.

Be careful about using public Wi-Fi networks as there are

substantial security implications
Bluetooth?

This is used to communicate with short range stuff like

hearing aids, speakers and specialty types of equipment.

There is a whole bunch of stuff on the Web which is very good.
What is the “CLOUD”

Firstly:
What is a gb?
It is a Gigabyte - billion characters
The term is used everywhere:
- NBN often has a limit of download in gb
- cloud storage is in gb
- When you buy a phone the price varies according to how many gb they store
(eg my phone is 128 gb – I currently use 27 gb – Why 128 gb? – no idea –
just means it costs more and uses more battery)
- A 32gb phone is probably quite adequate for most people
So what is the CLOUD?

In its simplest form it is a method to backup up your Phone,

tablet , PC

Apple - iCloud
5gb free; 50gb $1.49/mth
Google – Google Drive
15gb free; 100gb $2.49/mth
Microsoft – OneDrive
5gb free; 1000gb $6.90/mth

Just make sure that you are connected to the Web with
WI-Fi if you use it

Google “Back up iPhone ( or Android) to cloud” for instructions

OR
Ask Siri or Google “how do I back up my phone to the Cloud”
