Maniac Magee is a book about a boy who searches for true home after he loses all his family

from a trolley accident. The boy’s name is Jeffrey Magee and ‘Maniac’ is his nickname. He has
nothing he can do, no address, no school. However, he is good at running for a long time,
making great records at the baseball court, and untying string. While showing his legendary story,
the author gives us the importance of no bias and hatred.

The thing that I really liked about this book was the mystical and strange image that Magee gave.
But one thing was certain. He did not care about the discrimination of blacks and whites and the
hatred between the two groups.

To introduce the summary, Magee is sent to a relative’s house after he becomes an orphan. His
aunt and uncle was a Catholic, so they could not divorce, but they hated each other. Jeffery did
not like the situation, so he shouted at the school stage to make them talk, and it became the
reason why he got out of their house.

Later on, he meets a black called Amanda, Amanda and her family greets him warmly, but a black
old man says bad words to Jeffery, who was white. Due to this, he moves out and spends time
with Grayson, a man who used to run at Minor League. Grayson met Maniac while he was
working at the park after he quit baseball. Later on in the book, Grayson dies, and Maniac is left
with no home again.

Finally, he goes to John’s house, and by the help of John’s siblings, they begin to open their
minds, and the story ends.

I guess the author wanted to show the pattern of racism from the story of an orphan boy. I think
this is a very meaningful book because it makes us think about the problem without giving a
solution. Unlike most books, the ending of the book was very convoluted. the author did not give
a clear resolution for the conclusion. There is no incredible reconciliation. Instead, the author
flings us a question on a social problem. Racism is a big problem because it prevents us from
thinking impartially. Biased thoughts limit a lot of possibilities. Although the author doesn’t show
his ideas directly, he gives us a hint on how to resolve the problem. The story itself was very
interesting, so we could concentrate on the book. Many people may not like open endings, but to
me, it left me an lingering imagery.

처음에 전쟁사를 다루는 책이라 흥미로울 것 같아서 선택했던 <삼국통일전쟁사>는 읽기에는 힘들었어도
생각보다 많은 정보를 내게 안겨준 유익한 책이었다.
이 책을 쓴 노태돈 교수님은 삼국 통일을 부정하는 이론이 많음에도 불구하고 삼국 통일이 객관적으로
성립될 수 있는 개념이라는 입장이다.
삼국 통일이 성립된다고 하면 삼국이 원래 하나의 나라였는데 분열되었다가 신라가 통일시켰다는 맥락이
된다. 하지만 삼국 시대의 기간은 세 나라가 하나였다가 잠시 다른 길을 걸었다고 하기에는 너무 길었다.
각각의 나라는 그동안 다른 문화와 풍습을 만들어내 아무리 원래 같은 민족이라고 하더라도, 오랜 시간 동안
각각 달랐던 나라를 하나라고 하기엔 부족함이 있으며, 그 나라 각각의 정체성을 무시하는 발언이 된다고
생각한다. 서로 다른 문화를 독립적으로 발전시켰던 삼국에게 과연 통일이라는 말이 어울릴지에 대해
고민해보아야 한다고 생각했다.
책 전반은 2 개의 챕터로 이루어져 있는데, ‘신라 삼국 통일론에 관한 이론적 검토’와 ‘삼국통일
전쟁의 전개’이다. 첫 번째 챕터는 신라 통일론을 부정하는 의견에 대해 나열하고 있다. 신라 통일론은
처음에는 신라인들의 삼한통일의식을 바탕으로 제기되었으나 이 이론에 대한 의문점은 현재에도 제기되고
있다고 한다. 즉, 신라 삼국 통일의 역사적 기여도와 삼국 통일이 정확히 어떤 것을 의미하는지를
고민해보아야 한다. 실제로 김부식의 <삼국사기>에는 진정한 삼국 통일이 신라가 아닌 고려시대에
이루어졌다는 견해가 나타난다. <삼국사기>가 신라의 삼국통일을 인정하는 역사적 인식을 가졌더라면
삼국시대 역사서 외에도 ‘신라사’라는 이름으로 신라의 역사를 따로 편찬했을 텐데, 그렇지 않았다는 것은
당시의 의식을 반영한 것이 아닐까라고 생각하였다.
국부론이라는 책은 이미 잘 알려진 책으로 무엇이 국가의 부를 판별하는 기준이 되는지에 대해 세계
최초로 설명한 자료 중 하나이기에 큰 의의를 가지고 있다. 잘 알려진 책인 만큼 선택함에 있어서
고민을 하였는데, 생각보다 흥미로웠던 것 같다. 이 책은 총 5 편으로 이루어져 있는데, 노동 생산력의
증대 원인, 자본 축적의 원칙, 경제 발전의 여러 단계, 중상주의와 농상주의에 대한 비판, 재정 문제를
논한다.

여러 이론이 있지만 그중 가장 잘 알려진 것은 우리가 사회시간에도 배운 보이지 않는 손일 것이다.

보이지 않는 손은 경제 체제가 자동적이며 지속적으로 통제하지 않더라도 경제가 원래의 상태를
유지할 수 있는 것이라는 개념이다.

아담 스미스의 이론 중 가장 주목해볼 만한 점은 자본주의 사회를 상품 생산의 구조로서 다룬 점이고

자유 경쟁에 의한 자본주의의 축적과 분업의 발전이 생산력을 증진시켜 모든 사람의 복지를
증대시킨다는 것이었다.

수업시간에 배웠던 내용을 다시 책으로 읽어보니 재미있었는데, 다소 어려운 책이였지만 보람이

있었던 것 같다. 가장 놀라웠던 점은 그 시대에 이런 이론을 썼다는 첫이였는데 찾아보니 국부론으
1776 년 3 월 9 일에 출판되었다고 한다. 그 사실이 놀라웠고 다음에는 이 이론을 반박하는 책을
읽어보고 싶다.
