• •Each muscle has an origin (fixed point)
• –Insertion (moveable point)
• •Muscles of mastication
• •Muscles of facial expression
• •Muscles of the floor of the mouth
• •Muscles of the tongue
• •Muscles of the soft palate
• •Muscles of the pharynx
• •Muscles of the neck
Muscles of Mastication
• •4 pairs of muscles
• –Temporal
• –Masseter
• –Internal pterygoid
• –External pterygoid
• •Provide movement of mandible
• –Protrude
• –Retract
• –Elevate
• –Lateral movement
Muscles of Facial Expression
• •Orbicularis oris
• •Buccinator
• •Mentales
• •Zygomaticmajor
• •Enable a wide variety of facial expressions
• –Eg. Smiling, whistling.
Muscles of the Tongue
• •Intrinsic
• –All within tongue
• –Shape tongue during speech, mastication, swallowing
• •Extrinsic
• –Styloglossus
• –Genioglossus
• –Hyoglossus
Muscles of Floor of Mouth
• Hyoid bone
• –Horse shoe shaped bone at base of tongue
• –Muscles of tongue and floor of mouth attach to this bone for support
• •Dygastric-
• •Mylohyoid-
• •Stylohyoid-
• •Geniohyoid-
• –All located between mandible and hyoid bone
Muscles of Soft Palate
• Palatoglossus
• •Palatopharyngeal
• •Raise soft palate during swallowing
Muscles of Pharynx
• •Superior pharyngeal
• •Middle pharyngeal
• •Inferior pharyngeal
• •Each named for its relative position
• •The pharynx is a muscular tube lined with a mucus membrane
• •Pharynx serves to conduct air to the larynx from the nasal and oral
cavities as well as food to the esophagus from the mouth
