PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION

APPLICATION: TASK 2
INSIGHT PAPER
Technology now powers our economy and is essential to global communication. Technology
has also fundamentally altered how we communicate. Nowadays, people spend more time
texting, phoning, and messaging on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
and Messenger than they do having in-person conversations. This transformation occurred
quickly over the past couple decades and has significantly harmed both the volume and caliber
of communication. Technology is something on which we rely. It's something we always do. We
would panic and rush back home to retrieve our phones if they were left at home. Sherry Turkle
discussed how communication has changed as a result of technology in her essay "Connected
but alone?." Since technology has advanced, how we communicate with others has changed.

Instead of speaking to one another, people prefer texting or messaging. When we're lonely,
technology has always been there for us. We do not perceive, however, that technology has
made us more isolated. According to Turkle, we will feel more loneliness if we lack the ability to
be by ourselves. Our methods of interpersonal communication have been damaged by
technology.

Eleven years after her TED talk, the topics Turkle articulated are still relevant today. Instead of
connecting with people in person, I believe that people feel more secure and at ease utilizing
electronics and technology. While establishing connections online is frequently simpler for
individuals than in person, we do not demand more from technology; rather, we like it.
Communication has improved, and connecting people is now more effective thanks to
technology. A saying that I found interesting from Sherry Turkle , "We expect more from
technology and less from each other”. This is indeed true especially nowadays because people
rather want their phone to be fully charged and have speed internet connection rather than to
socialize, make connections, and memories with other people.

It is obvious that technology has had a significant impact on our lives. The "Connected but
Alone?" presentation by Sherry Turkle was excellent. She did an excellent job of outlining how
technology has changed our communication styles. Let's continue to have positive and
insightful conversations with others despite how technology has changed how we communicate
with one another. Let's avoid relying on technology as well. We need to be able to be alone
because technology won't always be available to us.
