A sentence has three components:
a subject and a predicate and a complete
thought.

The subject is the topic and the one being

talked about in the sentence.
Usually, the subject is either a noun or a
pronoun.
The predicate, on the other hand, tells
something about the subject. The important
element of the predicate is the verb.
A sentence is a group of words that has a
subject and a predicate, and it expresses a
complete thought or idea.

Now, notice the groups of words below. Which do

you think expresses a complete thought?

1.Efriam Duke was an ancient king of Calabar.

2. If the owner of the drum walked over any
stick on the road or stepped over a fallen tree.
3. When the tortoise had been in possession of
the drum for a few weeks, he became lazy and
did no work.
4. Sent his enemies away with full stomachs and
in a happy and contented frame of mind.
Example:

-John waited for the bus all

morning.
-John waited for the bus all
morning in the rain last
Tuesday.
-I cooked adobo for our dinner.
Fragments
-A sentence fragment is an incomplete
sentence. Some fragments are incomplete
because they lack either a subject or a verb,
or both.

Now, notice the groups of words below. Which do

you think expresses an incomplete thought?

1.Efriam Duke was an ancient king of Calabar.

2. If the owner of the drum walked over any stick
on the road or stepped over a fallen tree.
3. When the tortoise had been in possession of the
drum for a few weeks, he became lazy and did no
work.
4. Sent his enemies away with full stomachs and in
a happy and contented frame of mind.
Look at these dependent clauses. They're
just begging for more information to make
the thoughts complete:

• Because his car was in the shop (What did

he do?)

• After the rain stops (What then?)

• When you finally take the test (What will

happen?)

• Since you asked (Will you get the answer?)

• If you want to go with me (What should

you do?)
The fragments that most students have
trouble with, however, are dependent clauses

They have a subject and a verb, so they

look like complete sentences, but they don't
express a complete thought. They're called
"dependent" because they can’t stand on their
own.

Here are more examples of fragments. Study them.

-The competing vice-presidential candidates (missing a

verb)
-Won the presidential race by approximately seven
million votes (missing a subject)
-Despite the allegations thrown at him (missing a
subject and a verb)
-If the majority votes for him/her (dependent clause)
Lorna wants a new bicycle.
The flowers in the garden.
The cat jumped on the bed.
More sugar in the recipe.
There are three green cushions on
the couch.
The waterfall at the top of the
creek.
