In a Serbian sentence the direct object of the verb goes into the accusative case. Neuter nouns and
inanimate masculine nouns do not change, while feminine nouns replace -a with -u.
For example:
Ja volim sok. Ja volim pivo. Ja volim kafu.
Gledam film. Pijem mleko. Čitam knjigu.
The accusative case, when suggesting motion, is used after prepositions kroz through, na to, on to
and u to, into.
For example:
Idem kroz grad.
Idem na more.
Idem u školu.
I go through the town.
I go to the seaside.
Note the difference in use between u followed by the accusative, and u followed by the locative case
Example:
1. On je u restoranu. He is in the restaurant.
2. Idem u restoran. I go to the restaurant.
In the first example u is translated in or inside and indicates location and in the second it is translated
as to or into and indicates motion.Similarly, the prepostion na is used with either the locative or the
accusative case, depending on whether you want to convey the idea of location or motion.
Examples:
Lokativ
On je na poslu.
Oni su na pijaci.
Živim u Beogradu.
Ručam u restoranu.
Ja sam na moru.
Akuzativ
On ide na posao.
Oni idu na pijacu.
Putujem u Beograd.
Izlazim u restoran.
Idem na more.
