€ Occurs when two

different neutral
materials are rubbed
together or come in
contact and electric
charges transfer from
one object to another.
€ These objects are ALL
insulators!

1. Using the materials in the baggie you

will choose 2 objects to rub together.
2. Using the triboelectric series you will
complete the chart (you’ll have to copy
it into your notebook first!).
3. Do this for 6 combinations.

€ Conductor – a substance that allows

electrons to flow through it i.e. metals
€ Insulator – a substance that does not
allow electrons to flow through it i.e.
plastic
€ Grounding – connecting an object to a
large body (like Earth) – it removes the
electric charges.

€ Charging an object by contact with a

charged object.

1. Using a material of your choice give a rod a negative

charge (use the electrostatic series).
2. Touch the charged rod to the metal leaf electroscope.
You will know you’ve charged your rod properly if the
lea es separate
leaves separate. If the
they don’t go back to step 11.
3. In your bag you have a variety of materials (copper, zinc,
plastic straws, wood, etc).
4. You will hold the rod on the sphere and then touch the
sphere with one of the objects.
5. If the electroscope leaves have returned to the neutral
position return to step 2. Now try touching the knob with
the other materials.

6. State if the material is a conductor or an insulator.
7. Do this for 5 materials.

€ Using a charged rod and a metal leaf

electroscope try to give the
electroscope:
A. A temporary charge (i.e. leaves go back to
neutral once the rod is removed)
B. A permanent charge (i.e. leaves stay apart
even when the rod is removed)

€ Charging a neutral object by bringing a

charged object close to, but not
touching, the neutral object.
€ Can be temporary or permanent.
€ You must use grounding.

means the rod has a ____ charge
2. Show using pictures and/or words how
you gave your metal leaf electroscope
a permanent charge by induction.
