INTRODUCTION

• Healing relies on formation of granulation tissue made up of

fibroblasts bounded by extracellular matrix, blood vessels (newly
formed), macrophages, and other inflammatory cells
• Macrophages present in wound remove debris, involve more
fibroblasts andangio blasts, and stimulate production of
extracellular matrix. The macro phages secrete collagenases and
other lytic enzymes which help in scar remodeling.
• Simultaneously, they also secrete metalloproteinases inhibitors
which act against the lytic enzymes, thus, facilitating uniform
remodeling.
• Healing takes place by the following two processes:
1. Regeneration
2. Repair

Regeneration and Repair
1. Regeneration: It results in complete restoration of the
original tissue by the proliferation of parenchymal
cells.
2. Repair: It results in fibrosis and scarring by the
proliferation of connective tissue elements.

The process of regeneration and repair occurs

simultaneously.

DEFINITION
• Healing is defined as the response of body
against an injury in order to restore normal
structure and function.
